Don't try Illinois - Class IV Felony.
Missouri (next door) is an "open carry" state. Gun must be in plain sight, but you'll get grief in any of the larger cities.

In N.C. is legal to carry a loaded firearm in the passenger section of the vehicle as long as it is in plain view from both sides of the vehicle. Kind of leaves some room for interpretation as to what is in plain view, and what is the passenger area of the car.
If you get pulled carrying in plain view (we have open carry in N.C.) you better keep your hands on the wheel and inform the LEO ASAP of the gun.

Florida is fine as long as it's "not readily accessible". That means incased in a holster/bag and in the glove box is perfectly legal.
On the other hand, you can carry a short (although legal length) carbine or pistol-gripped shotgun anywhere in your vehicle.

OTOH, Louisiana and MS do not recognize each other's CCW and so if I want to legally carry when I visit New Orleans, I either have to get a Louisiana CCW or a non-resident one from a state (such as Florida) that Louisiana does recognize.

One of the posts mentioned that state law allows "plain view" transportation in a car, but you'll likely get some grief in bigger cities. This is something I've heard several times before, and I still don't get it. What exactly does the officer give you grief about? I'm not being sarcastic; I tend to believe it happens. But I'm curious how they give you a bad time for doing something legal.

People get arrested daily for doing nothing more illegal than offending a cop. As many cops are against carrying, they arrest you for causing a disturbance or some such nonsense. It is never enough to know what the local laws are, one must be keenly aware of the local customs when traveling. Packing.org only goes so far. That is why I started this thread.

In Texas, you can't with handguns but rifles and shotguns are OK.

To carried a handgun in Alabama w/out a CCW it must not be with in easy reach of the driver and cannot concealed. It can't be loaded either.
Long arms may be carried in a vehicle so long as they are not loaded.

On your person, you can carry in the open, but not concealed. Some cities/counties/towns have old laws regarding open carry and you will be arrested if you have no CCW permit.
For carrying in a car, VA law is vague and it will depend on where you are, and if you inform the officer you have a gun, he will likely tell you just to keep your hands in plain sight. He may separate you from the weapon while he runs wants & warrants or he may ask you to stand where he can watch you or the other occupants of the car. Some officers will consider a weapon concealed if they can't see it, but others won't care if you let them know about it right away.
CCW depends on whether you have a permit issued in VA or a reciprocating state.
BTW, how will the officer know unless you tell him? He can't search your car unless you let him or he has PC. If he asks, he doesn't have PC and you can say "No." All of which is avoidable by having a CCW permit.

I'm afraid it takes a little more than that unless you are stupid. In most cases an officer will need to obtain a warrant before he can arrest, and is seldom able to detain you while a warrant is obtained. With the prevailance of video cameras, you don't find too much that people are arrested for that isn't legit. If you have bad experiences with a cop, document it, and try to get evidence. It will be obvious to all parties that the cop is harrassing, and he will likely lose his job. Generally, unless you give him a reason, cops will never even talk to you unless they know you or want your phone number.

You can't blame them for looking closely at you if you have one on the front seat. It's true that most Chiefs of Police are against the public being armed, but most street cops are pro-RKBA.

I keep a loaded handgun in the glove box a lot of the time here in N.O. I've been told many times not to open carry, even though its perfectly legal, because of cops being able to arrest you on disturbing the peace. Since I'm not willing to risk it considering how many cops I've met here that are asses, I'll just have to wait until I can get a CCW permit. And its a shame too because I've met many really cool cops in the metro area.

In Alabama
you have to have a CCW license to carry concealed. And
with that said, once you enter the passenger's compartment
of a motor vechile, its considered concealed! Violator's are
subject to arrest with incarceration.
