Quick Question....Is there a legal hand gun size that must be complied with. I know shotgun barrels have to be at least a certin size. What about hand guns.
I just bought a 38 cal Derringer with a 2.75 inch barrel. can I carry it or not?
By the way this is in Texas.

If memory serves me correctly from when I lived in Texas, the only restriction on what you can carry is revolver vs. semi-auto depending on what you used to pass the range test.

Just sent this e-mail to my CHL instructor...His reply was ...any handgun with a SA licence you can carry.
Just repeating what he said

As far as I know, you could cut a handgun barrel right off at the edge of the case if you wanted.

Not the smartest thing in the world, but legal.

. . . conversely, you can have a pistol with a 3m barrel if you like.

There is no requirement on pistol barrel lengths.

There is no requirement on pistol barrel lengths.
There are, um, practical requirements...

Only in england, harley man

Not true. Canada law prohibits "handguns with a barrel less than 105mm (4.14 inches), except certain specifically listed competition handguns which are restricted"

No doubt there are other countries with similar laws, but up here in upstate NY.. Canada is pretty close to home.

And don't forget California... they have a whole list of tiny guns that are not "approved" for use by the "commoners".

I thought california was part of england??

I'm pretty sure in America (the free parts not behind enemy lines) the size restrictions are just for importation where they issue points for different features, sizes, and specifications and must have a certain number of points to be legally imported, which is why we don't get Glocks in .380 among others.

The only restrictions on what you can carry are

1. If you qualified with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver.
2. If you qualified with a semiauto, you can carry either semiauto or revolver.
3. IIRC, NFA weapons are prohibited for carry
4. Blackpowder handguns may be prohibited as well.

I suggest going to the DPS website and looking under the "concealed handgun statutes and related weapons laws" link.

Not every State requires you to qualify in order to carry a handgun.

I have never heard of a law which sets a minimum or maximum length on the barrel of a handgun. The reason there is a minimum length set for rifles is to stop someone from calling a long handgun a short rifle in order to get around the handgun laws of that State.

Arkansas

Arkansas law used to be whatever handgun you qualified with was the only one you could carry. Now it doesn't make any difference. As long as you attend a CC class, qualify and are issued a CC permit you can carry whatever as long as it is totally concealed. No part of the gun can be exposed.

A few cities (e.g., Los Angeles, West Hollywood) in California have barrel length restrictions that effectively ban snubnose revolvers and subcompact autoloaders. (Hopefully by now this will be in past tense.)
