What are the laws regarding legal immigrants ownership of guns???

At my work place we have a German citizen married to a American citizen.

before he came to the US his embacy told him he was not allowed to own a gun in the US..

we are in Illinois if that matters

thanks??

If you are a lawful permanent resident of the US (i.e. green-card status), you have the same firearms ownership rights under Federal law as does a citizen. However, some states (not all) impose additional restrictions on non-citizens (e.g. a non-citizen can't get a CCW permit in some states). You'll have to check your State laws for any such restrictions.

jke - just to add to Preacherman's info.

I am now an American Citizen but - had my first green card back about early 2002. Prior to that I had a few longarms, as these were bought technically by my wife.

Following that tho and having my PA DL - no probs, proceeded to get busy re handguns etc and got my CCW.

So yeah - individual states could vary the possibilities but as I understood things, with permanent resident status and proof of own state residency for whatever time - 90 days here - the rights re firearms were essentially same as a true citizen's... (I am glad to say).

thanks guys

Its what I pretty well told him that it was my understanding that he could own wepons with no problem.

He stated that his country told him he couldn't , which I thought was wrong info for him. (germany being a country where he couldn't own one if he wished)

I also told him to apply for a FOID and see where it goes :)

thanks again
