A single shot CVA shotgun may come into my possession that has been hacked up. The barrel is cut to 18 1/2" and the stock cut into a crude pistol grip. Could this land the owner in hot water, or is something like this legal? Its never been fired.

As long as it's over all length is 26" I believe and the barrel over 18" should be fine. If I recall.

Is a CVA black powder? If so not applicable. If it's modern cartridge than applicable.

What do you mean by hack job? A poor job shortening the barrel and stock?

The legal numbers are 18" barrel length and 26" overall length (assuming this is a modern gun like the CVA Apex not black powder).

Here is my Stoeger-based Lupara:

While waiting for my stamp I kept it just over the legally required lengths.

PS. Check your state laws too.

I believe he means shortened with a hacksaw.

If barrel is >18 and oal is >26 you're fine assuming your state doesn't have some wacky restriction.

True. If the OAL is less than 26" I would not accept the gun with the stock. Have him remove it first.

People usually use a hacksaw or pipe cutter and then clean it up with a file (I use my milling machine). I thought you were making a statement of quality when you called it a "hack job".

Mike

The "hack job" meant it was not the best craftsmanship. The barrel doesnt look bad, the stock is awful. Barrel is 18 1/2" overall length 27". Maybe I can find a stock for it somewhere.
Thanks for the insight

You have 1/2" to play with to clean up the muzzle :)

And it looks like you are legal (Federally).

Mike

Not black powder. Its a CVA 20 GA single shot, looks like an H&R, but with a fancy stamped reciever. Its spray painted a lovely black. I assume to make it look "tactical". Whatever that means.

In most US jurisdictions 18+ is legal to own w/o going through special loopholes though asking this question on public forum probably wasn't the best first thing to do.

Mike I bet that is real "fun" to shoot with slugs. :D
I shot a pistol grip 12ga for the first time not to long ago. It was better than I thought it would be.
Slugs don't hurt much because they are only around 1 oz. 9 pellet (1 1/8 oz) or 15 pellet (1 7/8 oz) 00 loads kick hard. Anything over 6 pellet normal velocity or 8 pellet low velocity will cause the gun to double when shot one handed.

I don't understand your reasoning here. The gun is legal.

Make darn sure that 18 1/2 inches is really that. Barrel length is measured from the bolt face to the muzzle...don't hold up a yardstick to the thing. Get a straight dowel rod and make a prominent mark at EXACTLY 18 inches. Stick the dowel down the barrel. Make darn sure that your mark is completely down in the barrel. If that mark stands out and you can see it, that's not gonna fly.
