Springfield Armory's standard M1A, birch stock with selector cutout (Sure wish it had a selector :D ), and M2 bipod.

Looked at a Springfield armory standard M1a the other day and the upper handguard was plastic...yuck. Do all the springfields come with a plastic upper handguard?

I'll have to dig up some pictures of my M1A, but here's a picture of my Polytech:

Niekamp, here's a snippet from an FAQ on the Fred's M14 Stocks site.

http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/faq.asp?ITEM=1

"Got any wood M14handguards?"
The military never had a wooden handguard other than during development. Due to the M14's high rate of fire - even semiautomatically - the wood handguard would catch fire and burn merrily after only 200-300 rounds rapid.

From the beginning, the M14 handguard was made of fiberglass, although in a slotted version which is somewhat rare now because it broke easily. Some felt that the slotted handguard, designed to cool the barrel, also screwed up the sight picture with hot bubbling heat waves.

At any rate, the solid handguard which replaced it - identical at first, except that there were no cutouts - was stronger and eminently satisfactory for the entire short life of the M14 service rifle.

Here's my latest:

Ready...
Freedom -- Any idea where to get a Norinco M305 in the US? Or are they available only in Canada?

As far as I know, the BATF has banned imports of Chinese made firearms into the U.S.
Kind of like Cuban cigars...'Eh?

If you contact the BATF yourself, you might get some more info.
The rifle itself, you can get from www.milarm.com . You'll want to talk to Gordon.
Best of luck!

Can't be. I bought a Norinco 98 shotgun a couple weeks ago, new in box.

However, in order for a rifle to be legally imported (semiauto, detach mag fed, that is) it has to have a certain number of US parts in order to legally accept a >10 round magazine. Otherwise, like the VEPR and Saiga AKs, it cannot accept magazines that hold more than 10 rounds (legally). This is perhaps why the Chinese M14 clones are not seen on these shores; they don't want to make a proprietary magazine for it an limit it to a 10 round gun.

Actually, mine came with 2x 5 rd. short mags. I purchased a couple of modded long mags for mine so it would look like the original 20 rd. mag.

Maybe you could check with an FFL holder to see if they can import one to the U.S.
On the reciever on the Norinco is a import stamp. I'll check it out when \I get home. It was Imported by XXXXX XXXXXX SFLD. XXXXXX (can't remember). But I will check it out for you.

I understand that Norinco SKS (Type 56) rifles are not sold in the U.S. either... A real shame.

Gewehr98,

If you don't stop posting that picture of your M14, you are going to cost me a great deal of money! :D I've wanted one for years and you are killing my willpower.

I've also wanted an M1A for a long time and you guys are not helping matters. Keep the pics coming though, maybe I can enjoy them through your pics.

Ya know, Hkmp5sd, Winter Haven ain't that far from Satellite Beach...

If you want to take it out for a test ride before going out and buying your own, I can arrange that!:D

That would be California drool.

Note the weird, California-legal thingie hanging on the muzzle of that stainless-barreled M1A. :neener:

Thanks for the offer. I'll certainly keep it in mind. Of course, I might as well go ahead and save up my money before coming to visit since I'd probably stop on the way home and buy one!:)

Springfield, Inc, is selling the slotted handguards now?

Or is that something you put on after the fact, Sactown?

The military had a very short love affair with the slotted handguard on M14's, hence my asking.
