I'd like to know how many THR members own and/or shoot the 6.8spc.

Love this round. I build up an AR in 6.8 SPC specifically for hog hunting and I have been very pleased with it.

Every well placed shot with a .223, 69 gr HP has resulted in a DRT piggie, but when hunting black hogs at night, perfect shot placement is usually more of a theory that a reality. The 6.8 definitely gets their attention. Took a darkie last Sunday night that turned out to be a quartering shot that went in w-a-y too far back. He only made about 10 steps before expiring...had a massive exit wound on the other side.

I did my homework for quite a while before purchasing an upper in 6.8 SPC II (6.8 x 43mm). One would be well served to pass on a SAAMI spec'd offering (although it can be reamed to SPC II). The 6.8 SPC II chamber has a longer leade and lowers chamber pressure, ensuring a safer shooting gun (a bit like the difference between a .223 Remington and a 5.56 NATO). Only a FEW gun makers are offering the obsolete SAAMI spec'd guns.

This caliber excels with shorter barrels, is accurate, and hits plenty hard for small to medium sized game.

Your AR 15 platform is nicely upgraded with this caliber, and the only difference between it and a 5.56 NATO (hardware) is:

Barrel
Muzzle device
Bolt
Magazine
Ammunition (of course)

All else is the same.

The 6.8 SPC II really shines with a 1:11 - 1:12 twist rate barrel... works best with the M4 feed ramps. These offerings will shoot ANY/ALL of the factory loaded ammunition, as well as all warmer hand loads.

Three sources of brass are available for this caliber:

Silver State Armory (Small Rifle Primer) (They also offered some Large Rifle Primer for a while)
-Commercial Loads
-Tactical Loads (NOT to be used in SAAMI spec'd chambers)
Hornady (Small Rifle Primer)
Remington (Large Rifle Primer)
-A number of ammo vendors are using the Remington LRP brass for their factory loads (S&B, Cor-Bon...)

Those who use this caliber a lot are finding that the AR platform in this caliber responds best to a good hard/hot primer, like the CCI #41/450s and the Remington 7 1/2 BRs. SSA has switched to the CCI #400s and some pierced primers are happening. Hornady's loads are pretty mild, but their brass seems to be very consistent in quality. Remington's LRP brass will show signs of pressure sooner than the Small Rifle Primered brass will, Remington's loads are also pretty mild.

Gun makers using the obsolete SAAMI specs are few now:

Remington
Ruger
LMT
Model 1 Sales

For the last few years I have owned, shot and worked up various hand-loads using a Stag 6.8, that I improved with M4 style feed ramps. A Tubbs, flat spring, an A2 butt and a couple other things.
It is a very accurate cartridge, rifle combo. For two legged critters it offers a lot more slap than a 5.56mm. It is also fine for Deer, Coyotes, wolf, and smaller caribou. I will eventually sell mine because I prefer something with even more zap, for here in Alaska. Plus I have the habit of buying new rifles or cartridges every year and trying them out until I become bored with them and move on...

I have a half dozen of them. Great cartridge, very effective and great for hunting!

The 6.8 is my Favorite round...by a wide margin.

The 6.8 has become my primary round for hunting, predator control, tactical rifle matches and home defense. I own more 6.8 rifles in more configurations than I care to list.

The last six coyotes and four deer were taken with the 6.8 using 110g Sierra Pro Hunters...including this 10pt Buck shot at a laser measured 253 yds which field dressed at 205 lbs.

These were two of the six coyotes taken, The female on the right was shot behind the left shoulder quartering away while running and the bullet exit severed the right shoulder / leg leaving it hanging by just a strip of skin.

This is a view of one coyote taken at just over 200 yds looking toward my shooting position.

The 6.8 does everything I need done...and does so better than many other caliber rifles I own.

Owenslee - Good lookin' harvests! I hope to do the same this year as it will be my first with a 6.8 and first in GA.

I am really enjoying mine and even my poorest performing loads are grouping tighter than I need. I think my worst (10x optic, bipod, no bag) was 1.5" and have settled in with a group that had ~1" vertical stringing and ~.5" windage.

here are my two

built the top rifle specifically for hunting the wooded and brushy areas back home in South Dakota and also for the mountains in AZ that have thick scrub oak and shots ranging from mere feet to across canyons.

LMT lower, model 1 upper with 16" HBAR barrel. (the stock has been replaced with an A2 stock and the magpul CTR went to the build i just finished above.

I have two Shilen barreled 6.8's(one 18" and one 16" Ratchet rifling) that are the best I have seen as far as velocity and accuracy and would not trade or sell either one for any other AR made, although I do have one nice 5.56 also but it's just a range/SHTF/HD rifle because of the 10K rounds of new(not counting reloads) 5.56 ammo laying around here and there.

Will Post some pic's soon!
