Lets talk AR-15 Red Dot Sights (Assume I know NOTHING)

I used the Eotech for years and Other than battery life and the need to have spares, and to remember to turn it on it was great. And for your stated use it is still great. However in my working rifles I didn't want to think about batteries nor on switches, so I went with the Acog recently.

Then there's new Aimpoint PRO (Patrol Rifle Optic). The PRO splits the difference between the M2 and M3 with 3 years of battery life on the same 7 of 10 brightness setting, on the same 1/3N battery. The PRO is NVD compatible, and waterproofed exactly the same as the M2 and M3. In fact, it's supplied with M3 manuals, and just an addendum sticker inside the lid of the box detailing the PRO's features. The PRO comes with Aimpoint's QRP2 flat top mount for the price of an M2 or C3 without a mount ($85 value). Right now Aimpoint only let's LE dealers sell the PRO, but they can sell them to anyone. You'll have to find an LE dealer, or order online. The PRO runs in the low $400s.

I have a PRO, and I can't imagine a better red dot for the money.

What's kind of amazing is that there are red dots out there with Auto off after a few hours. Some don't like that, I hunted with the 1Gen with 8 hour battery life for years. When game came close, I just turned it on, like others flip up scope covers when in inclement weather.

For civilian use, Auto Off is no real challenge, saves battery life, and makes sense in an optic that doesn't need to be on 24/7/365. Given the actual few days of use a year, it's better to take out the battery, or use a lithium for long term storage and less chance of it leaking. There would be little effective advantage if it was sealed permanently and never ran down (just like a Trijicon, but cheaper.) There's a lot more to the scope than just one feature.
