It's already been emphasized to keep it short and to the point. I suggest NEVER send a letter "To whom it may concern". That goes straight to the trash. Know the sheriff's name and use it. NEVER have a misspelled word! I definately would write the sheriff, but you may have to go elsewhere as well. The sheriff is not a basic cop--he is supposed to know the laws! I wouldn't give your age simply because you are so young. That could go against you.

But, as someone else said, why not just go to the internet and look the statutes up? And they ain't going to fit on a card in your wallet!!!

It seems you are asking for legal advice and that is not the job of the sheriff or police. The AG can advise you on his or her interpretation and application of laws.

If you want legal advice see a private attorney.

Because the gun I will be carrying does not have a safety and I am not comfortable with carrying a chambered round in that gun just yet. IF I'm not comfortable with it, I feel no need to apologize for it.

Of course there is no need to apologize. Why would you think there was? For that matter why do you feel the need to justify yourself to the sheriff?

My $0.02 is that a sidearm without a round "in the chamber" is mostly worthless. If you don't feel safe carrying it that way then you should get something else.

^ I HADN'T DONE ANY PROOF READING! hahaha

I would laugh if I'd sent it and they had sent me a list and map of all of the statues in Colorado. haha.

Seriously guys. I see now the error of my ways and will not be sending the letter. I'll just be asking the AG for info..... and statues! haha

Also, have you visited www.rmgo.org & www.cssa.org, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and Colorado State Shooting Association web sites. Both of these sites may have pertenient information for you. CSSA has some attorney's involved and they have some information, or at least used to have, on Denver's rules.

That helped a ton. exactly what I was looking for.
Now I feel like I know the rules.
Thanks so much

Colorado DOJ

Nightwing: first off; your letter shows a tremendous account of yourself and desires to maintain "lawfulness". With that you should be commended.
I did a quick search: Colorado DOJ will and can answer you questions.
Google 'Colorado DOJ' it kind of comes up strange, but the first is "contact us"

Most of the suggestions are about keeping your note short and to the point.
nuff said.
Follow up with your findings. Thanks

As it turns out I have sought legal guidance, in Colorado, about weapon legalities, in the past. I began with the Sheriff Office, was referred to the DA's Office whose resentative advised me to retain the services of an attorney.

I'd expect the same. Keep us posted.

what is the point of carrying without a round in the chamber?

If the gun is holstered you can't touch the trigger anyway. If you are not comfortable carrying chambered then I think you are not comfortable enough with a gun to carry period.

Yall do what you want though.
