Dear Senator,
It would be my desire to express this in person; but I realize that is impossible.
I served this nation proudly as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. On principle, I walked away from that career; forgoing my retirement. I did that because I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, understanding fully its history, origins, and meaning. A socialist state with an out-of-control Federal government running roughshod over the several states and the population; that is controlling ever more parts of citizens’ lives and confiscating ever larger portions of income for redistributive purposes; and that now is in a rush to disarm the citizens on the pretense of safety is no longer operating within the boundaries of the limited central government the Constitution calls for. The blood of our forefathers, our grandparents, parents, sons, uncles, and brothers was shed from Lexington to New Orleans to Antietam to Belleau Wood to Anzio to Nam River to Khe Sanh to Fallujah and Kunar Province defending freedom and liberty; not socialism and servitude to the state. As you continue to pass laws restricting our freedoms and selling our future and our great-great-grandchildren’s future, you are contributing to the end of a great experiment in freedom and liberty.
Do not support any legislation that further undermines the Constitution and our Republic. The Federal government is increasingly taking actions that will lead to the destruction of this nation, either economically or politically. These are not desirable outcomes, and should be unacceptable to you.
The Second Amendment is, sadly, all that now remains to restrain the Federal Government from completely ignoring the remnants of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Amendments. The Founding Fathers knew exactly what they were doing with the Second Amendment. Despite what a poorly educated writer at the New York Times might think; history is clear on the matter. Men are corruptible, mobs are easily swayed, governments and societies evolve. We are at a precipice, and, looking down from the edge, this student of history sees growing totalitarianism and darkness. It is not too late to turn back; but like General Gage attempting to seize the arms of the colonists, the Federal Government is broadcasting its desire to ensure complete dominance over subjects; not serve its citizens by securing “the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”
No legislation ever proposed will stop an evil person from committing evil acts. They will happen. Our response to them will be telling. Much like there was abhorrence to the idea of forgoing all of our freedoms and throwing all Muslims into camps after September 11, we should recoil at the idea of making millions of law-abiding citizens into potential felons overnight by passing laws which are unconstitutional, unenforceable, extremely divisive, and do not address the root cause.
Congress has passed dozens, hundreds, of “common-sense” gun control measures over the years; which remain largely unenforced. The criminals – the real problem to be addressed – continue to walk after shortened sentences and dropped charges. The urge to “do something” needs to be tempered by a logical examination of facts, statistics, and our rights as Americans. These so-called “assault weapons” are a made-up category of firearms that may look scary to some, but operate just like many others. They are used in such a low number of crimes they barely register; in fact they register below hammers and fists. The tool of a madman in a well-publicized example of evil is not in itself evil; and banning the tool, even if you could confiscate them all without starting a rebellion, will not banish evil. Timothy McVeigh and his despicable cohort fired not a single shot; our response was not to ban fuel oil, fertilizer, or trucks.
You took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Please, just try to live up to it, and try to convince your fellow Senators to do the same.

Sincerely and faithfully yours,

pyro69
