Just got off the phone with Leupold. I am looking to change the reticle in my 2005 model VXIII 2.5-8X36 from the standard duplex to something with hold over points.

The three options I have are a Boone and Crockett ($110 bucks), a Mil-Dot ($160), or a custom reticle based on my ballistics for $70. Anyone had experience with either the Boone and Crockett or the "custom" reticle? Which would be better for hunting big game and target shooting out to 400 yards?

Mil dots are really only useful if you are shooting at people. They are a range finding device and not really a bullet drop compensator unless you build a dope sheet for it. . The B&C reticle is MUCH more useful as a hunting aid.

I like B&C a lot for ranging deer sized animals. Horizontal ranging reference works great for deer.
Mil dot to me is worthless unless you are shooting at people. You can use the dots for a dope sheet but for their intended purpose they don't work in the real work without a 6' tall reference point.

Take a look at H25 reticles though. They'l give you enough info to make your head explode.

If it's a VX-III instead of a VX-3, personally I would sell the old one and buy a newer model with the money difference. You're gonna have the $110 plus probably $25 shipping in the old scope, without increasing the value.

There is a significant difference in optical quality and field of view. I have two older models and two of the new ones. No comparison

This past Christmas season there were VX-3's at half price.

Thanks guys. I may well end up selling it rather than going through the expense of having it worked on.
