Ok, after some research I'm leaning towards getting a Vari-III 4.5-14X40 AO Matte in Duplex for my FN Police Special. My question is, what advantage does getting the Tactical with the extended Target adjustments really give me? Is it worth paying the few extra bucks to get it or is it a waste of money.

I haven't found anyone with bad things to say about Leupold scopes, but has anyone had problems with this particular model? Model # 53543

Thanks,
Troy

Rockrivr1:

I have this exact model but with Mildots on my 700P. Fantastic scope, haven't had any issues at all. Is it worth the extra cost for target turrets? That all depends on what you are doing with it. For punching paper it is nice being able to make adjustments without a coin or screwdriver and without moving the rifle or my shooting position.

IMO, if you plan on just shooting at one particuar distance (and possibly on rare occassions guesstimating hold over/under on targets of opportunity that are not at your set range), than target turrets won't do much for you.

If you like to be able to set the crosshairs on the target at any range, then target turrets help greatly, partucularly the external ones like the M1 turrets. (Given you know the bullet path and proper elevation/declination/windage adjustments to your scope for differnet distances.) Begin able to adjust by hand without tools (including coins) is great, IMO. I'll never go back to slots.

Only downside to the turrets are their size. They do take up some room and stick out to the side a bit. Much easier to bang around with and need more clearance in your carry case.

The others already covered the pros and cons very well. I have two Leupold scopes with the M1 turrets and am very happy with them. They're great for long-distance shooting when you have a ballistics chart. Otherwise, if the vast majority of your shooting is at a fixed range, then you'd probably be better off saving some bucks on the scope and putting it towards more ammo. :)
