Finally got Leupold Turkey Scope far enough forward on XM-15

SEE post 18

What does the forum think about putting a Leupold VX I 1x-4x turkey scope with heavy duplex on an evil black rifle (actually, a Jersey legal XM15-E2S flat top with Ace fixed skeleton stock, no AR's allowed in NJ)

These scopes are sold for shotguns.

should work just fine depending on the eye relief and how you hold your rifle.

i would personally get something with a 30mm tube to give you more of a cushion on the angle of your cheek weld

looked at this scope on optics planet...

The Leupold VX-1 Shotgun Scope has a 75-yard parallax correction distance that's factory set to match the closer target distances of shotgunners and muzzleloaders....

this might be an issue if your trying to reach out. other than that i can't come up with anything wrong with it.

The only outdoor range I can get to is maximum 100 yards.
75 yard parallax correction should be fine.

yeah it might actually even be better if your absolute max is 100y , not sure what the normal "parallax free" rifle scopes are usually pre set for, probably 200y if i had to guess.

Go for it. Parallax is a miniscule issue at 4x or less anyway. I have an AR-intended 1-4x scope that I'm quite happy with (Burris FF TAC30) but I see no functional reason the Turkey-intended scope won't work just as well.

If you already have it, why not use it? If you don't already have it, there are good options (including the Leupold made Redfields) in the same price range.

Can anyone explain this?

I'm going to use the Trijicon Accupoint as an example

the 1'' models are not very forgiving in terms of the keyhole effect when your eye isn't perfectly centered and looking down the tube. the 30mm version probably gives you an extra 15 degrees of a buffer either way.

just a personal observation. could just be an accupoint thing, but it is very real. go to a gun shop and look for yourself.

~100-150 yards

From Leupold:
Most Leupold scopes are adjusted at the factory to be parallax free at 150 yards. However, there are exceptions:
1. Leupold rimfire scopes are set to be parallax free at 60 yards.
2. Leupold shotgun/muzzleloader scopes are set to be parallax free
at 75 yards.

Got it on but I had to push it all the way forward and attach the thick recoil pad in order to get barely enough eye relief for a clear sight picture. And it's still a bit too close. I might have to put the front ring behind the adjustment knobs so I can move the scope forward.

The only problem I have encountered with the heavy cross hairs on the shotgun scopes is lack of precision at longer ranges i.e. 300yds.

shotgun scopes do real well on AR's..
the extended eye relief places the scope forward of the charging handle.
the low magnification makes target acquisition quick.
I put a Sightron 2.5x32 shotgun scope on my AR10 & love it

I say do it. I put a similar Simmons scope on mine. One of my friends called me Bubba until I let him take it for a dance. Now he's got one too!
