I have a savage model 99 .308 that i plan on scoping for a fast handling very lightweight rifle. I am trying to decide between the Leupold vx-II 2-7, weighing 10.5 ounces vs the Redfield Revolution 2-7 weighing 11.1 ounces. The Leupold costs around $300, while the Redfield is around $130. Which scope would you put on a savage 99 .308 for elk and deer?

If you have the money for the VX-II then get that.
I like Leupold's glass mostly due to the lack of distortion compared to many other brands. That and you can't beat their warranty.

If I had the money I would have picked the 2-7x40mm VX-II for my Tikka T3 to stick with the light weight theme. Unfortunately I had to settle with a 3-9x40mm VX-I but that scope has been great too.

Well I commend you for choosing a lightweight scope that doesn't resemble the Hubble telescope.
Generally speaking a quality scope in the 2x7 range that is used on deer sized targets is more than adequate to easily make shots out to 300 yards from my on experience.
The VX-II is a very good scope but I can honestly state that I have a 2x7 Leupold VX-1 on a Remington 600 in .308 and have also owned a VX-11 and except for the non click adjustment on the VX-1 I must say that except for really critical light of early/late shooting there is not that much of a difference between them.
Since I have not owned the Leupold made Redfield I can't honestly comment on it's quality, but from what I have read it's pretty good.
So at the end of the day both are very good and you will have to choose which one of these scopes best fits your long term hunting situation.
I would happily own either.

the vx2 is hands down a better scope then a vx1 redfield revolution or a older varix2. better glass then both the others and much better ajustment turents then either of the others.

VX-II is a much better scope. The Redfield compares to the Rifleman series. With a Rifleman selling at around $190 vs $130 for the Redfield.

it comes down to your budget as much as anything. i have the 2x7 vxII and it truly is excellent IMO. if i had the money i would buy another without hesitation.
i have 15 year old redfield 2x7 and it's a POS. regardless, i would try a revolution in a skinny minute. you just can't beat the warranty and peace of mind knowing that leupold will back it up. not so in the case of my redfeild tracker....

nikon prostaff 2-7x32 or if you have to pick one of your two, go with the redfield.

ha, I didnt read jpwilly's reply, but it seems we both like the nikon 2-7x32. I have two of them and they will outperform more expensive ones.

The Nikon Prostaff 2x7 is basically a shotgun scope who's parallex is set at 75 yards.
Of course it would still work.
I have a Nikon Monarch UCC 2x7x32 on my Remington 600 in .243 and it is superb.
I rate it easily next to Leupold VX-III.
Damn shame they quit making it.

you may want to look at a nikon buckmaster just throwing that out there. I have a couple of the monarks. but I have some friends that shoot buckmasters and like them a lot.

Out of those two, I'd get the VX-II, however, you can get a lot better glass for the money. I own a Prostaff and I like it for the price, but it's not VX-II quality glass. However, a Vortex Viper is better glass than a VX-II and you can get them on clearance in 2-7x32 right now for $175 from Cameralandny.com Plus Vortex has just as good of a warranty as Leupold if not better. The Vipers are comparable to the VX-III line. It's imo the best way to go. I've never used a Redfield, but I've used a Leupold VX-I which is a step up from a Redfield, and imo it falls short when compared to the competition. The Vortex Viper is the best deal imo right now. However, another great deal is the Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 on sale for $199. This is also better than the VX-II. When those two scopes aren't on sale the Burris FFII and Vortex Diamondback are the best in that price range. Their glass rivals the VX-II while being quite a bit cheaper.

Here is a great writeup on scopes under $200. It includes the Redfield in that comparison as well as the FFII and Diamondback. The Vortex Vipers on clearance are the step up from the Diamondback's so they will be even better.
