Vortex vs. Redfield

I actually bought that Vortex Crossfire for my 700 SPS Tactical in 223.

It is a nice scope, but the eye relief leaves something to be desired when zoomed in. Zoomed out, it's very clear and I like it. It has served me well for about 6 months now. When I max the magnification, i just really need to get my eye close in to see.

There was a great cleaning cloth that came with the scope - one microfiber, and one bigger leathery type cloth.

The lens caps were a little cheap looking/feeling. But...the only one who has to look at those is my gun case, so whatever. I want to get some flip-up caps soon anyways.

The only real gripe i had was that the sunshade had this ugly scrape on the inside of it, down to bare metal, right out of the box. I bought mine from SWFA. Not a big deal, but a quality control issue. I didn't even bother contacting anyone, though I guess I maybe should have.

The scope itself is pretty good. The things that came with the scope weren't quite up to par.

I wouldn't hesitate buying another Vortex, but I think I'd try Redfield next time - just to compare. The sunshade/lens caps were little touches that did bring things down a notch when opening up the new scope's box.

I would contact Vortex...you shouldn't have to ship your scope, and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they just shipped you one and asked that you return the damaged one in the same box. If they do request the entire scope, I would just invest in some NAPA low gloss black engine paint. Tape off the outside and spray a nice thin coat within...should fix you right up with a powdery matte finish.
