I have a Leupold VX-lll 4.5-14x40 scope. I'm really struggling to find the proper eye relief on this scope. I've turned it up to max power and moved it back and forth and can't find a good position for the scope. This isn't my first scope I've mounted but I can't seem to get this scope to clear up completely. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same scope on my Winchester coyote and never had a problem with eye relief. Is it to far away or to close? Can you get it right at a lower power?

By the way on gun rights Alaska>Montana

I have 4 of them and also never had an issue. Is it that the rings are the wrong height or you can't get it far enough back or forth?

I pretty much only by VX3 4.5x14 or 6.5x20's AOx40's now. They just seem to work for me.

Getting it to clear up, and eye relief are two different things. Is the focus ring set to your eye?, are you playing with the parallax adjustment? My VXIII 8.5-25X50 LR, has to be set at the magnification I shoot at most, then eye relief set. The distance between max and min that you have to move your eye, is my only beef with this scope, you just gotta put it where you shoot the most and adjust your cheek weld at all other magnifications. The side focus is another minor beef, as you have to run it to infinity, then back it down to focus without going too far, or you will have to start the process all over again.

My post is assuming you have AO or SF on the scope. Regardless, the focus ring is always the first thing adjusted to get crysal clear x-hairs while looking at the sky. After that, the scope will only be parallax free at 150yrds, (without parallax adjustments that is).

The Leupold scopes have the most eye relief of most any scope. Yours is rated at 4.4" at 4X AND 3.7" at 14x http://swfa.com/Leupold-45-14x40-VX-3-30mm-Riflescope-P12695.aspx

It could be that the mounts and rifle combination you are using do not allow you to position the scope properly for good eye relief. Savage long actions are very difficult to work with unless you use extension rings, or a very long scope.

The focus has been adjusted to my eye and the scope does not have a side focus or paralax adjustment and scope is not touching the barrel. I've got a bunch of other leupolds and have never had an issue but with this one scope. I

Yes the scope is clear at other settings but once it gets above 12 or so it gets pretty fuzzy.

JD,
I sort of thinking the same thing. I have never struggled more to get a scope mounted.

That doesn't sound like eye relief then. I just looked through mine from my eye touching the scope to 10" back and of course the Field of view was affected but never did I get what you would call "fuzzy"

When I say fuzzy I'm talking about the fading in and out of the black from eye relief. I actually just when back to the drawing board really took my time and finally got a decent eye relief on full power and when the eye relief get longer on lower powers I'm still comfortably in the range of the scope.

See if you can look at another one at a gun shop to make sure yours is OK. I have a few Nikons (Pro-staff) and one was just a little soft on focus no matter what I did so it was returned and the new one was as good as I expected.

I just bought a Leupold VX-III 4.5X14L for my new Weatherby, it is my first Leupold for a rifle, was not cheep hope it works well.
