Leupold VX3i for Tikka 270 yea or nay?

My VX2 Leupold is a great scope, clear and very forgiving eye box. I’m a bit of a glass snob too (I own Swarovski binos). The VX3i would be even better than my VX2. Go for it.

I have two of these scopes, one is a 3, the other a 3i. Very good scopes. I have eye-balled 100s of prairie dogs with mine and clarity of view is always top notch. I've only had them on 17HMRs but they should do well on deer too if you are a set-it-and-forget-it shooter as others have suggested. If you want to make quick adjustments, there are better alternatives.

More the better Lol.

I looked hard as the vx5hd when I bought my Conquest. It would have been the vx-5 or a steiner z5. The steiner was winning, but the leupys a really nice scope too.

Ended up with the conquest because it was 1/2 the cost lol.

I have a Recknagle base and was looking at Leupold Backcountry rings.for my Steyr Pro Hunter.
Only offered in "medium" which IIRC might have been taller than Burris Sig Zee.
I went with the latter.

and took those off.

My Leupold VX3i 3.5-10X sits in regular Burris Zee rings..........lows.
My pic rail isn't tall, but its not as low as some others.

Doable w med rings, just more heads up than I like.

I dunno if it was due to stock design, thick receiver or base/ring stack up........whatever it was, lows got me where I needed to be.

Spend a bit of time and money playing the game to find what works for you......can be a drag. Wanted the Backcountry rings but just wouldn't work for my setup.

I mounted and removed my VX3i w the new Zee rings and they did not scratch it up.
Why I went w signatures to start with, but were too tall.

Still worked out OK.

May buy another VX3i for my 700 now ;)

It’s been a couple of years since I handled a Cabela’s Meopta but they were MeoPro’s then, not MeoStar’s.

They are still MeoPros.

BTW: i've been wanting a scope to replace the old Redfield Tracker on a very accurate .30-06 rifle. The old Redfield is OK until the power is changed, then zero is way off. Having a bunch of Cabela's points and based on conversation here, i ordered one: The scope was delivered today. It has a BDC reticle.

View attachment 945060 I ended up going with the Vortex Pro 7075 alum. Low rings and sending back the Leup. Backcountry rings. The Leupold rings had a side nut which stuck out too far for a hunting rifle though they would be alright on some sort of tactical rifle or shotgun. I am completely happy with the setup, but haven't had the opportunity to shoot it. The Vortex rings are also made in USA which does matter to me usually.

Looks good. I'm late to the thread, but think you made a wise choice. My hunting rifles that I don't plan to twist turrets on generally wear some Leupold model--from a 3-9X Vari-X IIc (oldest) to a VX3i 4.5-14X. There are some 2.5-8Xs in there as well as a couple of VX-Rs. The hunting rifles get zeroed two inches high at 100 and I'm good to go.

You have a great combination there.

I have a vx3i 3.5-10 and a mark iv 3.5-10. I also have a variety of maybe 6-7 other leupold scopes mostly vx3s. If your going to be shooting maximum point blank range I would reccomends something with a lower bottom end so you can really take advantage when close and fast shots present themselves. I would reccomend the 1.75-6 personally. I think fov is the most important consideration when choosing a scope.

I have a VX-3 1.75x6x32 with a German #4 reticle. I love the scope, there is something about it not measurable that I like. Only problem is they have been discontinued for a good while. I’d also want a bit more top end magnification on a .270 but that’s purely personal. A VX-3i 2.5-8x36 would be great.

Oh yeah they are great scopes. Mine is just a standard duplex that I got off a local classifieds site for cheap. I do have a vari xiii with a german #1 that is my all time favorite scope. It sits on my kimber 243 and I use it for coyotes and occasionally one doe hunts.

NOT BASHING Luepold,as there's a dz or so here but, if you're into "dialing" they wouldn't be my first choice. As a,set it and forget it,hunting scope.... they're peachy.

Care to elaborate? Not doubting you or your sources, bit I'm a knob twirler and was literally just fiddling with a VX-5hd 3-15 I really liked for my contender pistol. I need a scope that can handle a lot of changes....

No real "sources" Trashy, just observed behavior from using them for 40 years. They just don't respond fast enough to dialing IME. Love them,as I posted for set it and forget it,as their glass and coatings match up VERY well to my eyes. Their newer, higher end scopes probably do dial better than the VX ll's and lll's I have.

Their service is top notch too.

I’ve never owned or used a scope with a German #1 reticle. Being that the German #4 is my favorite and most of my non rimfire scopes have them I believe I’d like the #1 and wouldn’t mind owning a scope with one. I don’t know of any current scopes that have them and don’t want to go with an older scope because of glass quality.

I like Leupold scopes, I have more Leupold and Meopta than any other brand. The VX line is not known for the preciseness of its turrets for dialing. I’ve not molested a VX-5HD, I have experience with the VX-6 though and they do track noticeably better than my VX-2, VX-R and VX-3 scopes. I’m not a turret twister, if I were it wouldn’t be with a VX Leupold.

the VX5 and VX6’s are a different erector setup than the 3i’s and below. I would agree with @BWS that the mid tier and lower Leupold’s leave some to be desired on the turrets but as said above the V5’s and above have great turrets. I believe they have the same or very similar erector setup as their competition scopes. I asked the question to Leopoldo a few years back and they confirmed this to me. I’ll revisit my email to them.

I have a VX3i, a VXR patrol and a Vx6 HD and there is a big difference in the turrets between them. They all are great scopes when their uses are considered.
