ok, straight from the horses mouth (reply from Leupold)

"All of our rifle scopes are built and assembled right here in
Beaverton, Oregon, by American workers. Because of the sheer volume of optical glass we require, however, we are forced to source that from different
places all over the world, whether it be in the U.S., Asia, or Europe.
There is currently no American glass manufacturer that can exclusively supply our needs for quality, sophistication of coating, and quantity. None of our rifle scopes are produced in China.

honestly, glass from Japan or Germany doesn't bother me, as long as the quality is there--some excellent glass from those countries

Sorry about the hijack...

It's considerably less costly in the R&D world to copy an existing design than to start from scratch, be it the Soviet Tupelov Tu-4 bomber (aka Boeing B-29), or the Chinese Norinco AR-15/M16 currently being imported into Canada. Let the Americans do all the R&D.

Is it just me, or does the grip on that rifle look like it came off a revolver?

So just buy a US Optics, and you know they are USA made. They have much better options anyway. They won't have a "cheapo" copy because there is no middle man to go through. You buy from them.

I like my Leupold, I'll have to check it out more closely to see if it's genuine. I did buy it from a reputable shop, and I do live in just West of Beaverton. Hmm, i guess if I have a cheap copy or I can't tell, I'll take it to their offices and report back. Optics are real good on this scope, I'd guess I have a good one.

I know it sucks that everything is being made there now and taking jobs away from us but i think we need to get a clue and realize we are being outmanuvered here in the states and if we dont start doing something about it soon china is going to be the new world superpower and we are going to be in a world of S*#T!!!!!

Immigration issues, Iraq, health care system. America is all ready in a world of S**T!. And are politicians are contributing to the problem for their own gains, and not doing anything about it.

So Leupold won't say which part of (Chinese) Asia their lenses come from, eh?

The critical part of the scope comes from China, with final assembly in Oregon. So, technically, they can still say "Made in the USA", save for their Wind River models.

Call me a troll, but that should really say "Assembled in USA", just like Browning had BAR rifles "Made in Belgium, assembled in Portugal".

(The late, great Gale McMillan clued me in on Leupold's outsourcing of optics several years ago, btw...)

Many are still missing the fact that when you look on the bottom of the scope it use to say Made in the USA. Why did they stop that can somebody shoot them an e-mail about that, this stopped around two years ago if i remember correctly from my source he did work with Leupolds every day.

Because of the sheer volume of optical glass we require, however, we are forced to source that from different
places all over the world, whether it be in the U.S., Asia, or Europe... None of our rifle scopes are produced in China.

So the scope, as a complete unit, may not be made in China, but they never specified that the optical glass isnt made in China. Looks like they tried to sidestep the question.

well, I guess that I am fortunate in that at this point I have a few spare scopes hanging around, so I won't have to buy any bastardized scopes or make hard decisions
