I have a very nice bolt action rifle and scope set up for prairie dog hunting with 17 HMR but knee and hip issues, plus the rest of the getting old thing means no more long walks.

I still have a lot of ammo and I was wondering has anyone used a Henry Varmint
HLH001V lever action 17? I mean the gun has real sights on it as opposed to most lever actions.

I had a Henry 17 HMR . It was called the Varmit Express by Henry. I has been in the hands of my grandson for 7 years now. It was a tube fed lever gun. The action was smooth, and it was very accurate if a I did my part. I considered it a “head shot only” squirrel rifle. The Hornady 17 gr V-Max bullet had a devastating effect on same game, so head shots it is ;)…I wasn’t a fan of the painted receiver, but then again it was not a very expensive rifle. Hope this helps, Tentwing

It said blued, I did not think paint qualified? Did you put a scope on it?
Yes and thanks for the speedy reply!

They may be blued now , but mine was purchased in 2008??…or so, and the receiver was painted. I am certain that Henry offers more than one model , so it is entirely possible that it comes in both blued steel a painted. Yes I scoped it. Henry actually offered an aftermarket scope mount for it.

I more than likely will not put a scope on because its suppose to come with decent sights unlike most other lever actions. But I wanted to have that option IF needed in the future.

The Henry rimfire rifles use Zamack V ( a zinc alloy) for the receiver and then paint it black. It is not blued.

If you look closer you will find a steel cover over that die cast, it may be painted black or blued but its not zinc thats for sure as you look how thin it is. Lots of die cast in most 22 or rimfires and even in some ARs.

I just handled one at Scheels and it is non magnetic and painted black. The rifle looked and felt fine for an inexpensive rifle, inexpensive nowadays being relative.

Interesting, but of course stainless steel or a lot of it anyway is non magnetic? I am going to look at one tomorrow and those folks are selling new for $518 plus tax of course. I find it hard to believe its stainless however.

The actual receiver of the Henry rifles is zamak, I am not sure what the cover they use is but all I have ever seen are painted black or plated, I have never seen an actual blued one even on the frontiers. Of the stainless steels I have worked with only the 3 classes of stainless ,304, 316, etc. are non-magnetic and truly stainless.

I am assuming you mean the rimfire receivers are Zamak 5, not the centerfire ones. How does one thread a barrel into die cast? So I find out Ruger uses the same material for the 10/22.
Well I have my Marlin 39A my dad left me and its going to my Grandson when he is old enough.

The Ruger 1022 is an aluminum forging. The Henry rimfire rifles are cast Zamak V zinc alloy and painted black or plated with Brasslite, they are not from stainless steel. The 39A is a steel forging. I never said anything about the centerfire Henry rifles being cast zinc alloy, I specifically said rimfire in post #7. The Henry centerfire rifles are a brass forging or a steel forging.

Well you learn something every day, thanks for the info. As far as lever action rimfire there really are not many choices so its still going to be the Henry. Folks have ran thousands of rounds through the rimfire models without issues so I would say the Zamak die cast is up to the job.

The discussion was about rimfire lever action rifles..

Well I need to figure out what is going on. This model has a high comb for a cheek weld in line with the sights. I can not get my cheek low enough to line up the rear and front sight correctly. Raised the rear more than I should of, but the front sight seems way to high to me anyway. Need to do some research, I suspect they have the wrong front installed. Anyway this target is at 25 Yds and its a 8 inch diameter, not good because its all over the place as I attempted to get the front and rear properly aligned.

I believe that rifle was set up to use a scope. As to there being no group, yep. Put a scope on it and see if it gets better.
