Lever Goodness

Quick question about pistol calibers in lever guns. Is the 45 Long Colt equivalent in power to 45 ACP?

And which is the better barrel length 16'' or 20''? And with which caliber 44Mag or 357Mag? Do you lose a lot of velocity with a 4'' shorter barrel?

dak0ta, Just my opinion on some of your questions. I reload 45acp and 45colt, among other calibers. The two you ask about the 45Colt even in lighter loadings is 100 fps faster than a high end 45acp load. I load the 45acp with 230grain bullet at 900fps and the 45colt 250grain at 1000fps for pistols like the 1911 and Colt SAA. The 45colt in my Marlin 1894 is a bit stouter at 1600 fps. on average about 25 fps loss per inch of barrel. this will vary and everyone has different advise and data. So just giving you general data here. I would use the 45Colt for hunting, but not the 45acp. I wont even talk about should you or could you, cause we all know were that goes. As far as barrel length, it depends on what your doing, how far you walking. I've taken white tail with 44-40 in 24" barrel length 1894 with no issue being hard to handle or maneuver. But with switch to a shorter 20" and 16" barrel and hard travel conditions, like deep snow, elevations (7000' - 10,000') long treks (14 mile) every pound makes a difference. YMMV. Just my thought and will listen to other views.

Here is a 45Colt in a 24" barrel, it handles very well, model 94 action can handle the higher end loads. I prefer the 44-40, but the 45Colt can do it with more velocity and can be loaded with far heavier bullets. I like 200 grain bullets in the 44-40 and 250 in the 45Colt. I have used up to 300 grain bullets in the 45Colt, but depends on what your gunnin for. The Marlin model 94 is easier to clean.

Here is a Marlin model 94 in 45Colt with 20" barrel. Tried to put photo in last post, but had issues. This one is easier for me to be more accurate at 100 yards than the Winchester in the above post. I think the sights are better on the Marlin. The Winchester has nicer woodwork on it.

I stumbled across one last week that I had to buy. It is a Marlin 1894CB Cowboy model, but in 38 Special only rather than 357/38; it is not the 1894CBC Cowboy Competition model which is normally found in 38 Special.

So I now have a 38 to keep my 357/38 company.

Quick question about pistol calibers in lever guns. Is the 45 Long Colt equivalent in power to 45 ACP?...

Not exactly sure what you are asking but since the 45 long Colt is available in a rifle and the ACP is not, the long Colt can be loaded hotter in a rifle than the ACP can be from a handgun. Ed Harris had a lever action modified to handle the ACP round but I believe it took a pile of money and a lot of work. Too bad, I would like one so chambered. With a 24"barrel, the tube would hold ??? 20 rounds? Like the old Henry, load once shoot for quite a while.

I handload for it but the damn thing shoots MOA with Hornady factory roundnose. They proved to be a little too tender for deer so I switched to Woodleighs but haven't shot anything with them yet. Had planned on taking it to Africa back in `06 but plans fell through.

Never tried Hornady's spitzer.
Yeah, the factory stuff is pretty good in mine also. For handloads, I rely on the Lyman 412263 mold to produce 300 grain bullets and load them over moderate doses of powder. I keep the velocities down in the black powder range, for most of my shooting, not many lions or rhinos left in the Ohio wilderness! But for the occassional one, I do have factory available.

jeepnik, Nice! wish I could find one of those. When I do they are in poor condition or over a grand in price.

Here's another favorite of mine:

.22 Magnum, Winchester 9422M, bought used off the interwebs (yes, the antis would be horrified...)

If anyone knows how to figure the Manufacture date on this, I'd certainly appreciate the input.

:)

...here's a link for most Winchesters out there, for SN# and date of mfg...

jstein650, Thank you neighbor, ...and you just made my day. I thought I knew all the Winchester s.n. dating resources. The one you posted is a new one to me. Apparently my 9422M was manufactured in 1972.

Here is mine. It is a recently manufactured Marlin 1894. The rail on it is the XS ghostring sight/rail. The red dot is manufactured by Primary Arms.
