Dawson Tragedy Illustrates Need for Gun Control: Dion
December 14, 2006
Montréal - The tragic shooting at Dawson College should convince the Conservative government to acknowledge the necessity for effective gun control in Canada, said Stéphane Dion, Leader of the Liberal Official Opposition, today.

"While pleas from victims of the Dawson College shooting and their loved ones seem to be ignored by the Conservative government, Canadians still want their children to go to school without fear of being harmed," said Mr. Dion.

"In the next election, Canadians will hold Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day to account for actively seeking to turn back the clock on gun control in our country."
Mr. Dion made these remarks at the end of a meeting with the Dawson Committee for Gun Control, where he met with Louise Hevey De Sousa and Nelson De Sousa, the parents of Anastasia De Sousa, who was slain at Dawson College on September 13, and Hayder Kadhim, who was himself wounded by the Dawson gunman.

Mr. Dion expressed outrage at the Conservative government's continuing refusal to heed the call from those affected by gun violence.

"How many times will Mr. Kadhim have to ask Mr. Harper to meet with him so he can make his case in favour of more effective gun control? If the Conservative government is so certain its ideology regarding firearms is correct, why would they shy away from being confronted with those who have a first-hand experience of what gun violence feels like?" Mr. Dion asked.

Mr. Dion said the Liberal Party of Canada remains committed to protecting Canadians through effective gun control measures including the maintenance of the long gun registry, while respecting the right of legitimate gun users, such as hunters, to practice their pastime in a responsible manner.

So is anything going to happen out of this in Canuckland?

I think the Liberals should practise minding their own business.

Same for the Democrats, except they should practice minding their own business. :neener:

alot less people would have been hurt at Dawson College if that sick twisted freak wasn't the only one packing. Why is this such a hard concept to understand?

Let them ban guns in Canada.

Maybe our politicians will be able to learn from that mistake instead of trying it on us.

But remember, as we hear on this board so often, being a liberal and being anti-gun have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with one another.

Ummm huge gun control bills were passed in 1991 and 1995.

Banned all kinds of guns in Canada.

So if this clown had used an 18.5mm hunting shotgun a la Columbine instead of a modern-looking 9mm popgun with a tiny magazine, it would have been better?

why do they call it the "Liberty Party"?

Why do they call it the Liberty Party, when they advocate a stronger government to save the people from themselves? How is it liberty, when they make sure that the people have no final recourse?

And this is the same question I ask people here in the USA ... how can you say "Power to the People" if you think "Only the goverment should be able to [insert whatever here]" ?

Best I can tell, the only people who ever gave power to the people were our Founding Fathers ... As for Che, Marx, Mao, Fidel and the other illuminaries of the Left, I don't see that their people have any power.

We're working on this, believe me. Right now our Prime Minister is trying to reform the senate to be elected (right now they're appointed by the PM, until they turn 75, essentially for life). The senate gives seats based on regions, so Ontario and Qubeec combined would still have about half the votes. Well, even that would reduce their power a little.

But there's a lot of anger up here now. On our 'public' tv station they don't even pretend to be fair and balanced any more, they're boosting the Liberals for the next election already, and hammering the Conservatives, who have been in power 10 months, for all the country's ills. This station has a lot of vitriolic statements about my province, every day.

And it's wierd, because not that long ago I remember it being kind of wierd to be gay. But watching state TV they're really, really pro-gay. Not just tolerant, they're pushing it. It's crazy.

Long story short, if the Liberals get elected they will ban guns, all of them. And this might not account for too many votes, but every hunter or shooter now knows. But what's more, they'll find a way to ruin Alberta's economy again. So what will happen is if 51% of Albertans simply want to leave Canada, the ballots can be printed, and the vote taken before Ottawa knows what hit it.

Come to think of it, maybe Alberta is a little vitriolic too, since our motto for the last 20 years has been:

"Let the eastern bastards freeze in the dark."

Mabey BC, Alberta, and as much of Western Canada as they can grab, should slit off. Then mabey Quebec will grow a pair ("courage" and "valor"...what were you thinking?) and split as well. Then the libs in Ottowa can sit on their thumbs and wonder why all the people left when they were just trying to "solve all their problems".

Well if they are promoting more government and fewer rights, they aren't very liberal are they? I guess they like that name better than authoritarian, Nazi, or Communist party.

But remember, as we hear on this board so often, being a liberal and being anti-gun have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with one another.
It seems you are twisting words a bit. Obviously loads of self-proclaimed liberals are anything but. I suppose you think the people in Iraq that are beheading civilians and planting IEDs are freedom fighters, too? I mean, that's what they choose to call themselves, so that must mean anyone who cherishs freedom is a terrorist, right? Same logic.

Dion like most politicians seeking power would sell his mother on the streets for a vote. This clown has very little chance of being elected and the more he opens his mouth the less chance he will have. Glad he thinks the way he does, just polarizes the gun owners more and there are 8 million of us up here.

Take Care

Bob

Terms like "effective gun control" mean nothing; terms like "preserving the rights of legal gun owners" mean less. If guns are banned, there are no legal gun owners, so no one's rights need to be respected.

There was, at one time, a U.S. organization which proposed the use of the police and the army in a house-to-house search with the summary execution of everyone in a home where there was a gun or a bullet. Not only did they call themselves "reasonable" but they also said their program would be "the first step toward real gun control." They didn't say what the next step was. Needless to say, some "liberal" groups thought the idea was great, and they claimed the ACLU approved (the ACLU refused to deny it).

I am always confused and amused that, given the definition of the word, people who support mass executions, brutal dictatorships, and the imposition of draconian penalties for even minor infractions can call themselves "liberal."

Canada's news is just like news in the US- skewed totally left yet they claim they are 'balanced and moderate'.

I'll trade you Massachusetts for Alberta.

Effective Gun Control?

It is to laugh.

Try keeping your criminals off the streets.

Try educating your children with moral principals.

Try encouraging strength and self-sufficiency in your citizens.

Quit protecting the villains.
