A friend has a Liberty Franklin 35 gun safe he wants to sell. Going to see it this weekend. On the plus side, it's in storage near my vacation home and would be delivered & installed free. I would like to help the fellow out, if I can, if the safe suits my needs.

It has been many, many years since I researched or shopped for gun safes.

My need is to prevent "non-professional gun theft" - a quick grab and go, in my absence, should I leave a few guns at there, and general firearms safe keeping from grand kids and the occasional visitors in my home, more so than being absolutely impervious to a major home fire or highly resistant to the best efforts of an experienced safe cracker.

The location is generally secure and not easily accessible. A care-taker is on site at the gated community. Anyone out of place, coming or going, will be noticed, would have to come through a security gait, and would still have a hard time finding the place. So, hopefully, it's unlikely to be vulnerable to simply hauling the safe off, and value of contents typically in the range of no more than $3-5K, max, and maybe more often, empty. So . . .

Scale of 1-10, where 1= save your $, it's junk and 10 = pretty well made and a good value at the right price, where is the Liberty Franklin 35 and what is a fair price, if it's in good shape.

How does it compare to the pair of Browning Pro-Steel Safes I currently own (purchased 25-30 years ago)? (like this one 3879996_01_browning_prosteel_safe_640.jpg

What are the alternative "best buys" for reasonable quality gun safes in the under $3,000 range and under $1,500 range, capable of securing 8-10 long guns and several pistols?

Thanks for any knowledgable advice on the subject of this particular used gun safe.

Depending on condition I would stay somewhere between 50% and 70% of present retail.
I doubt you'll have regrets at that price. Some will say it's junk but if you bolt it down in a place that minimizes leverage at the front of the door it should serve the purpose you intend.
My biggest concern with my safes is how quickly a modern cutting wheel can slice metal.

Franklin is 4th in their lineup from the top Presidential line. It will do what you ask. It is big for 8 to 10 guns. It is 36" wide comparable to smaller safes. Given your budget, if it is just to secure gun from theft, it will be fine.

TEC;

As an actual protective device, well, it's adequate for your stated purposes. Get it for the least amount you can. In point of fact your Browning units are only a little bit better, if you want to upgrade that'd be the place to do it. Therefore, my suggestion would be to move one of the Browning units to that residence and use the money saved to upgrade your primary firearms storage. Look at getting a true safe, not an RSC, if the value of your present holdings is favorable to the cost.

Hypothetical. What might you have in mind and perhaps suggest for, say . . .

20-30 long guns, 10 pistols?

50-60 long guns, 25 pistols?

Potentially more (i.e. walk-in vault)?

TEC;

Let me pull some numbers out of the air, in regards to my above statement concerning the value of your present holdings. Therefore, supposing that the average rifle is worth something around $1,000.00 and the average handgun is half that, in the first instance you put to me, you're wanting to protect approximately, at 25 rifles 10 pistols, $30,000.00 in contents. If that number is anywhere near correct it would seem to me, and your insurance agent also I'd think, that a true safe would be indicated.

The only true U.L. rated safes offered to the consumer market today that I know of are: AMSEC (and then only the very top of their extensive line), Brown, and Graffunder. I sell Graffunder, and am confident I can beat the pricing of the other brands for comparable units. Graffunder is also a custom maker, you are not limited to what's in their catalog for size or configuration. Therefore if you should want a safe built to dimension to fit a particular space, it can be, and has been, done. The company also does vault doors, also with options such as in-swing, left or right hinges, wall thickness considerations and others.

If any of this is of interest to you, please PM me.
