Light and faster of heavy and slower ?

Asked Speer,
I'm looking at using Speer 150gr. 311" hot cores out of a 7.62x39 running 2100 fps at muzzle. Will this give me enough speed for expansion out to 100yds ?

Got a reply from Speer:
Rather than velocity we use a minimum kinetic energy for expansion on many of our rifle bullets that we make and for this your minimum would be 1000 ft/lbs for a deer sized target and about 1200 ft/lbs for bear and elk sized. With these in mind for minimums you should see decent expansion results at close ranges like that.

That should put both bullets within their expansion criteria out to 200yds.

Running that back, 1,000ft.lbs. with a 150 means an impact velocity of 1732fps, so basically the same ~1800fps floor I mentioned above for the 180grn 35cal HorCor. I don’t love the expansion at 1800, but it’s one of the better 35 cal pills for that speed. Looks like it solves the OP’s problem, however, for the range he needs to harvest game.

Ran a few more handloads and headed to the range with the chrono this morning.
Ran a base load just under max and then a load just over max. No overpressure signs when working up the loads.
Base 125gr 2560 fps ave
Max+ 125gr 2615 fps ave ( 25fps max diviation)
Base 150gr 2160 fps ave
Max+ 150gr 2260 fps ave ( 25fps max diviation )
Think I'll load up some 150's for my nephew's youth hunt and report back in early Oct with field performance.
