The little 5.7x28MM cartridge is one that I've taken an interest in. The way I see it... it is something of a rebirth of the .22 Hornet, but in a shorter rimless and half priced package. It is also more efficient and I'm betting it is more accurate than the Hornet. $45 bucks for 50 rounds of Hornet. $22 bucks for 50 rounds of 5.7... and that is with a good Hornady V-Max bullet.
Yet the 5.7 has one slight problem for it to be appreciated as a sporting cartridge. There are no sporting rifles in the caliber.
I talked to CZ, and they have ZERO interest in a 527 in 5.7... which was a first choice. Christensen wont touch it. Shilen makes a Remington barrel for it, but this doesn't solve the issues of bolt face and magazine.
Anyone else out there who would like something like a light 527 Carbine in 5.7?

Ehh, no not really. Don't you think that with the very light bullet it wouldn't buck wind well past 100 yards?

5.7x28 begs to be handloaded, at least if what I've read on the internet (albeit multiple times) is true. The factory stuff, if I'm not grossly mistaken, is underloaded and shoots a polymer or aluminum cored bullet. It's essentially a training round.

Since it's shorter and less tapered than .22 hornet, I'll second that handloaded it would probably be a more precise round.

FN was saying a while back that they would make a bolt action for the round, but they keep pushing that back for some reason and putting sunshades on the FS2000 and promising us the SCAR.

Frankly, if you shoot a .22 centerfire, you almost have to reload. The price difference between the Hornet and the 5.7X28 disappears when you do that -- in fact, Hornet brass is probably cheaper than 5.7 -- and you get a lot more cartridge. If you really want something small, with zip, try the K-Hornet.

If I were in the market (I already have a Hornet), I'd get a CZ and I might think about running a K-Hornet reamer into the chamber.

I wonder if the 5.7x28 round will fit into an M1 Carbine? Unless the bullet is really long, I'd think it would. E.g., the .30 Carbine round is 7.62x33.

That could be an interesting package. Not sure what it would do better than .30 Carbine, but it might be fun.

Dang that 5.7 upper is really cool! Wonder what the price and availibility will be.

midway sells the chamber reamers & headspace gauges along with a bolt body & mag follower for the rem 700.
just get a rem 700 in .223 & have the barrel set back enough to clean up with a 5.7x28MM reamer.

Lol, for those of us who cannot afford $695 for just part of a gun, I still think it would be great to have a simple carbine in 5.7x28mm. Composite stock, 16 in barrel, ten round magazine, integral sight rail...it should be possible to put together a great little varmint/plinker/home defense carbine at under 5 lbs loaded.

I would be interested if, perhaps in another thread, someone with more knowledge than me could run through a comparison of the 5.7x28mm round with other similar cartridges, whether wildcats like the 5.7mm Johnson or more common ones like the .22 Hornet or event the rimfire .22 Magnum.

OK, I have a 22 K-Hornet and I like it a lot. The AR57 is a semi-auto with the same type of performance. OH NO! another .22 to reload for and my poor wife will not understand (again).
