Ruger, Savage, and CZ don't get on the list if you're looking for a lightweight rifle. Their action alone is almost a half pound heavier than lighter designed actions like the Remington 700.

Savage lightweight hunter rings in at less than 6 pounds. I have one and it is an exceptional lightweight rifle.

Mel Forbes worked with some folks to create a separate company to produce lightweight hunting rifles as he winds down his work. Was in. All the gun mags three or so years ago. Not sure on price.
I have one of the original Model 20 ULAs in 7x57. It's been a great rifle. Quite a bit over the cost figure you mentioned though.
It has a heavier barrel than the standard Model 20: 161hnac.jpg

Hello everyone, being the family "gun enthusiast" I have been tasked with finding a new rifle for my uncle as a Christmas gift from my aunt. She is tired of him borrowing her Remington 600 Mohawk and wants to find him a similar 308 rifle. What would you recommend for a short lightweight and reliable option? I was thinking of something a little more modern but not to "tactical". Price range of about $1000. Thanks in advance!

THE lightest rifle in currect production is the Ruger American COMPACT in .308

I have one and its MUCH lighter than the Ruger scout rifle that I also own.

They are both accurate, and I carry the American when I want to do a lot of humping through the trials and woods.

I hunt with a Kimber Mt. Ascent in 308. It weighs under 5 lbs with 22 inch barrel I believe. Wonderful hunting rifle as well as their Montana models. I realize the ascent is over 1k but used montana models are available for less than 1k.
