Too late indeed, but I will mention that just today I acquired a Springfield XDE single stack 9mm with a hammer and a manual safety. Very flat profile, 3" barrel. First shot and carry condition can be either single action or double action first shot, single thereafter. Has a decock position incorporated in the safety lever. This gun was featured in an article in the Dillon rag some months ago.
So I actually got hands on an XDE today. I liked everything about it but the backstrap of the grip. Felt like it was protruding too far at the bottom and pressing my hand away from the gun. Other than that...downright awesome. Easy slide to rack. Good sights. I can pull the hammer back to full cock with my right thumb. Seems like it has everything some people like about the 1911 (ability to carry cocked and locked, first shot single action) except for the grip safety, and everything people (meaning I) like about the Beretta 92 (ability to manually cock the hammer, safety decock, safely carry a round in the chamber, DA to SA trigger. Lightweight. Compact. Yeah it's bad ass...if you don't mind the grip. To be honest, I'd e interested in the full size version except they have grip safeties.
