I've been waiting for 4 months, and finally got notice that my NY carry permit has been approved and I will get it late this week, or early next. I've hunted for a long time, owned many shotguns and rifles, and for a short time had carry priveleges because I worked for a sheriff's department. But this will be the first time in 15 years I'll be able to own a handgun. What prompted it is the fact I'll be bear hunting with the bow in Maine this August and for years have borrowed a friend's .44 while bear hunting up there. This year, there won't be any borrowing, and I've ordered a Taurus M-44 which will be in at my local gunshop about the same time my permit comes around. I've also layed-away a Bersa Thunder .380 for a concealed carry piece. When I used to carry years ago, I enjoyed it, and look forward to carrying concealed once again. Are these the two guns that most people would've picked? No, I know they aren't, but money is a consideration and I feel these two will perform the functions for which they've been selected. Thanks to THR, my endless (4 months!) of research tells me that, at least, these are guns that I can depend on, even if they are not high-end. I also have a Springfield 1911 on my shopping list, and a Ruger GP-100, but those will come in good time.

For now, I am like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Just thought I'd pass along the good news.

Birddog, congrats on the permit, I think you'll enjoy being able handgun hunt in NY.
I think both of your choices in arms are good solid picks. I've been hearing good things about the Bersa guns, and Taurus is building a good rep for themselves (my carry piece is a Taurus PT145).
My brother picked up a M-44 from the Gun Center in Buffalo a couple of months ago, groups very good with various loads in the early going, we're waiting for the weather to break so we can do some specific load development.
Are your books available locally? Looking forward to reading them.

Congrats.

Bersa .380 is a fine weapon.

Buddy of mine purchased a Taurus .44 mag last year. I had the opportunity to shoot it quite a few times and thought it was a nice weapon as well.

Enjoy.

almost there

I just got a call from the permit office today. Tomorrow -- Friday the 30th -- is the day. By coincidence, my Taurus M-44 came in today as well to my local gunshop. Soo.....if the timing is right, tomorrow I'll get my permit, my .380, and my .44....

I'll keep you posted.

"Christmas Eve" is still more than 60 days away {April 9 the new CCW law goes into effect} for us here in Ohio, but GOOD FOR YOU ! ! ! !

Still trying to read through the 144 page Adobe.pdf doucment that is the new law. [Man, talk about an effective insomnia cure......zzzzzzZZZZZ]

Best wishes, good luck, good hunting, and "keep 'em covered up while CCW'ing".

The few ,the proud, the NY CCW holders......unless you want to carry in NYC anyway....congrats......and people think NY is not gun friendly.....just go north, and west of NYC.........lots of us are packin'

Congratulations ,, You got your permit just in time - did you see where the Governor wants a $100 state pistol permit fee , plus $25 for each gun you put on it, to be renewed ever 5 years.

M44

For a good time, run some UMC 180's through it. You will love the blast and flame. Just don't overdue it as you get flame cutting on your topstrap.
The M44 is a good gun. I had an original made in 1995. Watch the side screw on the right side above the trigger guard. Mine always managed to work its way loose and I had to Blue Loctite it every so often. Enjoy.

question for Stormin

Just by coincidence, I chose the UMC 180's for my test run, and shot a whole box of them today. They grouped very well. Since I plan on shooting it enough to get comfortable enough to deer hunt with it, I was wondering what you meant by "don't overdo it" when shooting them. Do you mean because it causes excessive flame cutting? If that's the case, which brand would you recommend? Thanks for your time.
