Where I live (outside US) I cannot own semi auto long guns in anything but 22lr, 40sw, 12ga, 20ga. Needless to say .223/.308 are completely out of the question.

What would be your pick for home defense ?

1) 40sw SBR (glock conversion, sig mpx, etc barrel length doesn't matter)
2) 12 gauge (barrel length must be equal or greater than 24")
3) 20 gauge SBS (barrel length not a factor)

Tough decision but 20 ga might do what you need. Several shot sizes available for different jobs.

24 inches isn't very long, first choice 12 gauge, second, 20 for me.

24" seems like a deal breaker for CQ, otherwise that'd be my pick. The Sig MPX in .40 with a telescoping stock is a pretty thing but I want more lead going down range. Any good 20ga semi auto contenders ?

Is mag capacity limited for the .40? I would probably look at something like the Beretta cx4, Cz Scorpion Evo 3, Sig MPX, or maybe something like the Just Right Carbine... All short barreled from the get go, or cut off once you got them.

Purely curious; what area has such a random grab-bag of restrictions?

Or is this an elaborate 'which one should I buy' thread? :D

Saiga 20. Lots of mag options, durable as heck and almost any ak folding stock works on them. Plus they like most standard ammo without cycling issues. Just add a gun light for nighttime...

Given that 9mm, .223, and .308 were not options, I'm guessing it's a country where military calibers are restricted... That might also be why 12ga has a minimum barrel length.

Gtscotty you've nailed it. I'm quite impressed :)

Brazil restricts most calibers (specially NATO calibers if I'm not mistaken). 40sw is also restricted in here however they recently allowed .40sw semi auto long guns for IPSC shooting.

We have several restrictions including the yearly amount of ammunition you can go through. This varies accordingly to how long your C.R. (firearms registry certificate) has been active.

A SBS 20ga saiga is very appealing. I believe I'd have problems importing it though. It'd have to be something nearly stock. Since I haven't seen many stock SBS out there, I think I'd be limited to what you guys have in the states. The lightest auto loading 20 gauge I've found is the entry mossberg sa-20 18.5"

EDIT;
The stock saiga isn't nearly as appealing as one would think. I can work on it here though, but that's a pita with all the paper work one would need to go through.

I didn't mention it but a .30 carbine rifle is also an option. I don't know of any other rifles being chambered in this caliber except the auto-ordnance carbine. I remember reading that some folks were having issues with it.

I'm another vote for the 20ga. For HD I would prefer a 14" barrel.

#3 buckshot - 2&3/4" puts the energy down range of (2) two rounds of .357 magnum. The 20ga is easier to handle and lighter than a 12ga .

I have both semi auto and pump guns in 20ga. that serve me for HD. I am restricted to 18 inch barrel .(darn)

I would probably opt for an M1 carbi e as well, in the folding stock M1A1 configuration if possible. After that I would opt for the 20 gauge SBS.

A shotgun is the best HD option...PERIOD. A 20 gauge shotty with a 18" barrel is plenty short enough for CQ defense and throw some 00buck in there and it's lights out for any bad guy.

With the .30 carbine added to the mix, that would be my choice.

Yes, a sawn off shotgun, even a 20 ga, is a hard hitting short range weapon. But it isn't much FUN. If you don't enjoy shooting it, you are not likely to practice much/enough.

For strictly home defense...the 20ga is probably your best option, but for all-around defense/hunting/survival/sport, the 12ga would be my huckleberry.

With the criteria you have laid out (firearm choices and for home defense only), my choice would be a 20g pump in as short of barrel length as you can.

I'd go .40 SBR with red dot and light if I could afford it. As others mentioned, a 14" 20 GA pump would be a great option as well. Add a sidesaddle, light and sling. An M1 Carbine is a great choice if you can afford a GI or if the Auto Ordinance ones are reliable (I don't know).

Sounds like a candidate for a pump .223 (Rem 7615 or an AR variant).
If wanting rifle.

Home D for me I run a shotgun, AR and a 1911.
