Just need a load check. im running 158 gr. LSWC in 357 mag.

have a bunch of IMR-4227 that i would like to use.

Hodgdons lists H-4227 but not IMR-4227.

My IMR is new manufacture stuff from 2014 so if that is any thing on using the hodgdons site?? read a lot online about IMR/H-4227 being the same.. but i dunno about that.

I dont have a Lyman book so any help is appreciated! thanks!

I'm thinking 15 grains. kinda plinking load to use the powder i do not have a use for, but need to get it up there to keep it clean.

I think 15 gr. is close to the upper end for158gr.LSWC., whether it's IMR4227 or H4227. I am pretty certain of that, having loaded many sometime back.

thanks!! i went out and tested it. started at 14 grains. mine is made in Australia for what its worth? dunno about all that jazz of different brands switching around on the 4227. went to 15 grains no sign of pressure. think im gonna load around 14.8 grains, it shot clean at 14.7 so i figure for a bit colder weather 14.8 would be good. Mostly will be shot out of a 4" 686 anyways so not to worried. did test my wife's Taurus 605 though just in case something got turned around. fell right out of the 605 at 15 grains no lead, no flat primer, and so on. thanks again!

Hodgdons lists H-4227 and IMR4227 on the .357 Mag rifle data page. H4227 only on the handgun page. Same H4227 data for rifle or handgun. Jacketed 158 IMR4227 data on the rifle page.
IMR and H 4227 are numbers 65 and 66 on the burn rate chart. Exactly the same data for jacketed bullets too. My old Lyman book gives 9.5 to 15.0 for a cast 158.
What other powder a powder looks like is irrelevant. You can't tell anything about a powder except its colour and grain shape by looking at it.

thanks! never thought to look at the rifle data. seems like 14.8 will be fine. i used what i could find on the internet and quickload for a max of 15 grains. seems close to hodgdons data, if anything im on the lower side. but it burnt clean so im good with that.

I called Hodgdon and asked a while back. . . said to start IMR-4227 at the H-4227 starting load, and work up.

Lyman shows 14.0-15.5 gr. Lee shows 15.8C as max. Ken Waters shows 15.0, which is my favorite in a 6" 686. 15.5 gr. showed slightly higher recoil with a bit less accuracy.

thanks guys!! im close to that 15 grain load of yours jesse i went with 14.8gr. and out of a 4" 686 haha must be a pet load around that area.

Imr 4227

Since when did IMR 4227 start looking like H110/W296?
Correction made above. Ty Walkalong. IMR 4227 was a short stick powder before. I picked this 1 lb up in April 2015. Made in Canada. Package by Hodgdon in the USA. Big supprise when i opened it. I remember it being larger sticks ??? When i blow the photo up, it is a stick powder. Not really like W296. IMR4227CanadaApril2015%20A_zpsgomc47mm.jpg
