Load for 38 Super?

Folks,

I'm looking for a decent handload for a 38 Super.

I'm thinking of loading the .357 145 grain Winchester Silver Tip
in the 38 Super case with a decent fast burning powder.

Okay, before everyone jumps on me; Yes, you can load a .357/.358 bullet
into a 38 Super, or even a 9mm case too!

I know of a couple friends who have (9mm) sub-machineguns who tell me that the 158 grain JHP or JSP works well in both handgun and SMG.

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT..........COMMENTS?

IT's all in the barrel...some (most?) are larger than .355" so using bullets to match makes sense.

I've never used a fast powder for a heavy weight (for the caliber) in the .38super, so don't have any good loads using those. Have pushed 145's and 147's to about 1200fps (5" GM barrel)...which I'd consider max. at presusres about at factory levels....using Blue Dot. I started at 7.8gr....it functioned...and stopped at 8.4gr. Form brass expasnion (an iffy way to read pressure, but the best I have available), it's running about the same pressure as the SilverTip factory load, and earns 1197fps in that particular 5" barrel.

Have used 357 bullets in my 38 Supers with good results. I like Blue Dot for heavy bullets but if you must, 231 should work fine. HS6 is also a good one. Check your load manual.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I have alot of reading to do.

The weapon, by the way, is a Colt Series 70, Combat Commander. Its currentlly sitting in Arkansas at my favorite shop being powder coated in Charcoal w/gray high lights.

This guy is super, you should see what he can do with a handgun, rifle, or shotgun that has been abused or has road rash.........Let me know if you need his e-mail address. His prices are right!

Have to mention this.

Was woking on a WW296 load in a commander and had some of that ammo in my range bag when I went to an indoor combat match.

For various reasons, decided to shoot the ammo (mostly it was the dark nature of the indoor range). All was going well...no real problems and was getting good times. Next stge up had a "blocking" target set at only 5 feet (blocking as you had to shoot it...then move around it).


I set it on fire.

ribbonstone - I wish I had seen that !! Bet that got a reaction. I'm kinda usta seeing that done by the black powder shooters at the real close paper targets we sometime use in Cowboy Action Shooting, but then we expect it. I would never have thought of using WW296 in the 38 Super, hummmmm.....
