I purchased some 230 Grain XTP's and Gold Dots to load up in 45 ACP, and some 124 Grain Gold Dots to load in 9x19. My basic question is, will I be able to get enough velocity from W231 powder to have these bullets perform as intended? The only other powder option that I have is Unique, which I have 2 pounds of but have never loaded with. Looking for suggestions for both loads.

Thanks in advance!

Hollowpoints are designed to operate inside a window of speed. Normally the faster you drive them the more they open up. Neither of the listed cartridges generated excess speed resulting in fragmentation. You may also find that the slower a jhp is driven the deeper it penitrates. Your goals weren't stated so an optimal loading is unknown. In pistol SD loadings at or near max loadings are common.

AJC1, thanks for the reply. My fault for not being clearer.....when I said loading them with "enough velocity to perform as intended", I was implying fast enough to get expansion. I was also looking for any suggestions on using the Unique vs the HP38/W231. I don't believe 800fps is going to open a 45 XTP reliably, so what does it need? 900? More? Same with the 9x19 Gold Dots.....maybe HP38/W231 velocity is enough for those guys to expand reliably. Looking for loading suggestions and personal experiences with those who have loaded these with the powders referenced.

I had an xtp expansion chart before I swapped phones, so I know it exists. They will answer terminal ballistics questions if you call their help line. If you have enough of both I would favor unique if you safety get more velocity. For any round with the intent of being used in low light I prefer a flash suppressant like in be-86 or Silhouette.

Yeah, I think I'm going to give the Unique a try. I have it, and I can't think of what else I'll use it for. I'll look up some load data. If anyone has any, I'd sure appreciate it, too.

Thanks,

Thanks! I downloaded it and paid for the load I was looking for. They show from 5.2gr (700fps) to a max of 6.6 gr of Unique with the 230 gr XTP bullet with an AOL of 1.230 and list that at 900 fps.

There’s plenty of Longshot available online for those XTP’s. I settled on 7.3 grains based on Hornady’s load data and the performance out of both my Kimber 1911 and XD4” service model.

Longshot also works well in 9MM.

I've been loading my experimental 9mm & 45ACP SD loads with CFE Pistol & I've been very pleased with velocities, accuracy, & expansion (using Xtreme X-Def Bullets) I've grown to like the CFE Pistol powder a lot, the guns seem to clean up very easy after shooting with it too.

Unique... it's what's for dinner.

I load all my SD auto cartridges with Unique... it easily gives you good velocity, while being a little easier to manage than the faster powders. I have a few faster powders... TiteGroup, WST, W231, and W244... but I prefer the relatively slower Unique for SD bullets.

Alliant, Speer, and Hornady all have data for those bullets and Unique.
