Anyone got a good recommendation for a powder that will work for plinking loads for both 10mm and .40cal? Want something not to dense so double charges on a 10mm won't be possible without spillage, but will still fit in a .40. I'm planning on using hard cast 155 gr RN. I'd like something thats mild for plinking/range loads that will burn clean. Any Info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a fan of Power Pistol in my 9mm and .45ACP. As an added bonus it smells like pepper when you shoot it. Very clean too.

The only load I have for 10mm Auto with a cast 155 gn bullet is with Power Pistol.
Unique and universal always great powders and they are relatively fluffy. N340 would be another choice, if you can find it and find reloading data for it.
Clays, Solo 1000, Competition, and Nitro 100 are all bulky, but they are too fast for me to be comfortable with.

I am using HS-6 8.0 grains with Missouri Bullets 200 grain hard cast lead. CCI primers. With the 200 grain bullets there is not much room in there but a double charge would be possible I guess. I have not tested them yet but I am planning on good results.

Blue Dot and Unique for single base powders.
Bullseye and Power Pistol for double base powders.

Caution - double base powders typically double charge without spilling for most pistol loads. Use extra caution on load inspection.

They all work fine in 40 and 10 that I've tried inside the specified manufacturer limits.

SR4756, 180gr bullets, period
I really like Universal Clays in .40, but started playing with SR4756 and it shows potential for sure.

I don't Load 10MM.

I'm liking SR 7625 for plinking loads in the 10mm, should do well in the .40 also. Good loading density, meters like water, and is single base, should burn cool for lead bullets and their lube.

as a rule of thumb, are single based less dense than double based powders?
(for the same weight, will single based take up more room in brass than doubles?)

It seems to hold true, plus it also seems to take a heavier charge of the single base powders to get the same job done, so loading density is improved two fold.

Comparing an arbitrary setting of 20 on my Redding 10X measure with fast and almost as fast powders;
HS-6 (double) 7.3 grains
Titegroup (double) 5.8 grains
VV N310 (single) 4.4 grains
IMR SR 7625 (single) 4.7 grains
Trail Boss (single) 2.3 grains (just for fun)

Blue Dot is an excellent medium to heavy load powder for the 10mm and I've been using it your years. Don't load for the 40 S&W so I will make no recommendations.

Awesome, P02hammer, that's the kind of info I'm looking for.....Have you tried out Blue dot or unique?

In all the years of reloading, I've never tried Unique.
I tend go with the powders that meter well, I'm not a fan of trickle & weigh except when I use Trail Boss.

Green Dot would fit what you describe. It was very impressive in .40 and has good volume. Measures beautifully IMHO. I currently use Power Pistol for a load more like defensive, but if I wanted to tone it down, I would use Green Dot, a close relative of W231 but way easier to find.

p.s. all that is with Zero FMJ-TC 180 gr

9 grains of Blue Dot is a sweet load with plated 165's in 40 S&W, Unique and Universal also work great in 40. Blue Dot should work great in 10mm also.

Ok I ran 100 plus rounds through my glock 29 of the HS-6 8.0 grains with Missouri Bullets 200 grain lead. CCI primers. Seems like a good pretty powerful load. I loaded a 200 grain doubletap in the mag with a bunch of the hand loads and I could not tell the difference. I think that is a good thing. There was some lead in the barrel but it wiped right out.
