Last weekend a friend came over to do some shooting. Upon loading his rifle, I noticed that the first round went in without a problem. After that it got hard to push the loading ramp down. Looking in you could see the previous shell blocking the ramp from simply pushing down, but with enough force would push the round forward to allow loading the new round. Can anyone tell me exactly is supposed to stop loaded rounds from blocking the feed ramp? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mine does that as well. I'm not sure of the vintage of my gun, but it doesn't have the ugly crossbolt safety.

When loading the rifle, I hold the loading gate in just a little with my finger until I have all rounds loaded. It isn't that big a deal to push the gate open with a round in the magazine, but it does take noticably more force.

Tip: Don't push the round all the way into the rifle. Leave the rim just touching the receiver with the rim holding the gate open. Use the next round to finish pushing it into the magazine.

Go to the winchester site and download the owners manual. It will tell you to not insert the cartridge all the way until the last. Also, never use pointed bullets.

I always remove the loading gate and polish the front part, as well as reduce the spring tension some. Not maybe a job for someone unfamiliar with the gun, but it makes a lot of difference.
