I am getting into reloading, and my only rifle is a 270 wsm (which I love). Some friends and I are going to do some coyote hunting thisyear and I am interested in loading some lighter loads for my rifle. I was wandering what some of the lighter loads are that people have used. It looks like I can get bullets in the 90-110 grain range. I was just wandering if people have had success with this load. I am going to get the lee's 2nd addition loading guide, and I have the load data sheet that came with my dies, and it looks like these smaller load are possible. Just wanted some feedback to see if any of you guys are used these ligher rounds. My main reason for asking, is that I cnt find any 270 wsm rounds for sale that are lighter than 130 grain

I punched the data for a 90 grain bullet into my Powley computer. Adjusted the load density to get the velocity to 3,650 fps. I think that would make for a good coyote load.

You could take it higher, if you wanted, but it’s not really needed. That’s beauty of the WSM case. Versatility - being able to DOWNLOAD it to where you want.

The Powley computer likes 4350 and/or N150. I’d start at 63 grains and work up till I hit 3,650 fps. Recoil would be 14.6 ft-lbs. Not bad, but still a pretty good bark for a varmint load.

I’d zero at 250 yds. That would give a 300 yard point blank range for a 4 inch kill-zone. You’re 1.3 inches high at 100 yds. 2 inches high at 150 yds.

Yes, thank you very much. This is one of the reasons I bought the wsm. I had looked at a lot of different rifles before deciding on this. My choice was made based on being able to hunt a lot of different game. Thanks again.

Just remember that the cases on the WSM series of cartridges is slightly thicker than others.

If you go too low, you'll see a lot of soot on the cases because the cases aren't fully obturating to the chamber (not sealing completely). You can possibly avoid this by using powders that are in the faster end of the spectrum of suitable powders for the .270WSM.

Starting loads with either H4895 or IMR4064 should give good reduced load performance.
