anyone load honady v max in 223?

I did up some hornady 55gr sp rounds in different charges and all came out right on spec for powder and c.o.a.l but they have a canallure.

going to the range this weekend and want to load up some v max for shooting some woodchucks afterward but never loaded non canallure bullets before, any suggestions of should I just have at it?

using hornady brass fl sized, cci 400 primers and h335 powder out of savage axis hb and savage axis reg barrel.

thanks guys

I load the VMax all the time for my AR 15 ... no crimp either .... 50 gr Vmax .... 55 gr Vmax & 60 gr Vmax ..... all shoot very good with several different powders ....

Love 'em! They are very accurate out of my gun. I've loaded them using CFE223, H335, cci400 primers, no problems. Kept a stash for SD, zombie days.

...but they have a canallure.

Hornady makes a version of the 22 caliber, 55 gr V-Max with and without a cannelure.

I shoot the former without a crimp but if I bought the version with the cannelure, I would still not crimp. But, many folks do like to crimp their 223 Remington rounds. Hence the cannelure version and crimping is up to the loader.

I've been happy with the V-Max bullets in several different calibers.

Maximun OAL for my Axis is 2.300" Shorter is ok for bullets lighter than 69/68 grs. Longer will have feeding problems from the magazine.

I load them for bolt action and AR. I use the non-cannalure version. No crimp in either situation. It is prudent to check for bullet set back in a semiauto situation. If no setback, no need to crimp in my opinion.

In my bolt action I have plenty of room in the mag, so I load close to the lands.

In my AR I load to fit in the mag.

I use H4895 and they shoot good for me.

My AR shoots the 55gr V-max very well. I've loaded them with H-335 and "Tac" and both shoot fine. I've used the CCI #41 primers. Makes a good lookin' cartridge.

Used a lot of 55 v-maxes with my 12" twist barrel. Very predictable, responsive to adjustments. I used the ones without the cannelure but I don't know that it really matters, in fact the cannelure may even work better.
