This is one of those situations where if you have three books, you have four opinions -- a situation where the more information you have, the less answers you have.

I have consulted Speer, which I don't own but glanced at whilst shopping at Cabelas, Lee's Modern Reloading, Lyman 48th, Hodgon's website.

Of these, each of them lists a different load for W231. Some max out where others don't even start. Some list different data for W231 and HP38. While others, like Hodgon's own website, HP38 and W231 are listed as the same powder.

So my question: What do you load for a 95 grain lead, or 100 grain plated, in the 380 using W231 / HP38? I worked up a load but haven't shot it starting with 2.9 grains of HP38 up to 3.2 in 0.1 increments. But having consulted some other sources, I might be way underpowering the load since some sources work up to 3.5 or 3.6 grains.

If you have a chrono, what did you load that achieves a 1000 fps nominal velocity?

Well HP-38 and WIN 231 are indeed the exact same powder. I have run loads from 2.8 to 3.0 with no ill effects using Berry plated 100gr RN. I do not have a chrono or a place to even use one..

I ran 3.6gr W231 in my LCP, shooting 95gr Missouri LRN bullets, gave me 930fps avg. OAL was .970"

I've loaded Slash K 95grn LRN with 2.7 and 3.0 gr of 231 at .980 OAL. I couldn't tell the difference between the loads and both cycled well, and had a very soft recoil, much softer than factory ammo. The LCP is my wife's gun, and now that's her favorite load for it. I don't have a chrono.

Well that chrono data jives pretty well with the Hodgon data, and calls into question the accuracy of the Lyman 48th ed which has W231 almost 10% faster than reality would show.

Back in the day, when W231 was NOT HP38, perhaps the difference was more noted. Point being you cannot use old powder data when a company changes the powder but leaves the name the same.

Thanks for the info.

As a side note, when I emailed Hodgdon about the two powders, their customer service implied that they've always been the same.
