Loads for 45-70 Mauser
Warning: these loads are for strong actions, Ruger No 1's Mauser actions etc and far exceed safe loads in other 45-70 chambered guns.
Dear Sirs and Ma'ams,
I am working on loads for a 45-70 Mauser, and wouldlike your advice, suggestions, analysis, etc on one that eludes me.
I am trying to achieve 2100fps from a 350gr load (barnes TSX, FWIW) and have some published data in the 40Kpsi range that gets to ~1950fps. Might seem plenty but i am attempting a ballistic match to a +/-3 inch battle sight zero (BSZ) out to abt 150yds. So I need 2100fps, approximately.
I have published loads for a 500gr jacketed bullet (Hornady DG) that gets to 1900fps, and am wondering if these powders will get me to 2100fps w the 350gr.
For example:
45-70 Mauser, 350gr TSX
Powder: IMR SR 4759: 35gr= 1900fps, and 37gr= 1969fps
IMR 4227: 40.5gr= 1964fps
vs.
45-70 Mauser, 500gr DG
IMR -4198: 48gr= 1818fps
IMR 3031: 57gr= 1877fps
Would Quickload give me a psi and velocity number using the 500gr powder and charge, without changes, but seating the 350gr bullet? Of note, the 57gr 3031 charge is compressed w the 500gr bullet, but wont be w the 350gr. usually that makes me feel safer, but i woudl like some learned analysis.
many thanks!
