I just got a new S&W 625JM. I shoot IDPA in SSP, ESP and CDP divisions but thought I would give ESR a try. I took it to the range for the first time last Sunday and was kinda surprised at the stout recoil while shooting Winchester White Box. I intend to work up some loads using W231 under 200 GR LSWC and TMJ SWC bullets. My goal is to reduce recoil while maintaining accuracy.

I'm sure some of you have already been through this exercise so I'd like to hear what you settled on. Thanks.

I run 5.1 of 231 with 200gr LSWC for 850 fps (cronoed a lot of rounds) BUT, this is out of a 1911 I'm not sure what you will get out of a revo.

5.5 grains of W231

I have a 625-3 with a 5" barrel. My favorite load is 5.5 grains of W231 with a 200 grain cast SWC. It is very accurate and easy on the gun and hand. I have gone to using 45 AR shells too. No more messing with moon clips at the range. The moon clips are great in the field though. Quick and easy reloads for rabbit hunting:D.

I use trailboss 4.5 grains with a 230 RNL bullet, and 5.2 grains with a 200 lswc, thats the published data from their site. I have also tried 5.0 grains with a 230lrn, on the advice of one of their technicians but thats above published data. It was very accurate and mild recoil probably around 800 fps.

I also use these loads in my 1911s.

I would recommend getting 500 rounds of 45 gap brass and working up a load. The gap brass uses small primers, so you can reduce the mainspring/trigger pull a bit more than possible when using large primers. Gap brass is also shorter, so it ejects better. The best thing about Gap brass has to be that it doesn't require any tools to moon/demoon. 500 rounds of GAP will last for a very long time as it's designed to run at higher pressures than the ACP. Also, google "ranch products" they sell 100 moon clips for around $20 (make sure to ask for 100 as I think 20 cost around $15)

WST is real good for light target loads in the .45 ACP. Recoil is light compared to many powders and it is very accurate and clean.

Clays clame to fame is "soft shooting" in the .45 for target loads. It also can be very accurate.

Why is that??

The GAP extractor grove diameter is slightly smaller than that of the ACP.

The gap grove is .008" smaller than acp. I made the tool below when I used NT brass before I discovered gap.

A range officer that works the Chrono during USPSA matches recommended 4.7 grain WST with a 200 grain bullet. I use a WLP primer with mixed brass.
Many shooters dislike the blast from a 200 grain, they like the push of a 230 grain.
