Local Gun Auction...Nuts?

The place was packed, so lots of interest. I do understand premium prices for the hard to find items, like the Python and some of the S&W pistols. But, even Stoeger shotguns were bringing over retail, And here's another puzzlement. They sold some coins too. Kennedy 1/2 dollars selling for $17.50? Seriously? Oh well, I buy sculptures that just sit around my house. Different strokes, eh?
Were those 90% (64) or 40% (65-70)

Went to a gun auction yesterday.

Auctions were created for a reason, to get the most money for a given object. However, they can give one great deals on things no one else wants.

I probably “win” 1 out of every 100 or more but when I do I get a great deal. I have seen others “win” used products and pay more for them than what a new one would cost.

However, they didn’t just pay for the object, they paid for their “win”.

I shake my head and carry on. I try to not get caught up in stupid.

Then there are charity auctions, that are just a way for someone to walk away with something after a generous donation but that’s a bit different.

I have several customers who spend $$$$$$ on online gun auctions that are not GunBroker. I'm shocked at the prices they pay. I've shown them what the exact same gun in the same or better condition goes for on GunBroker.

GunBroker fees are nothing compared to that 20% buyers premium some online auctions charge.

But I continue to be impressed by the quality of packing that online auction houses do. They will bubble wrap a Glock in the factory box as if that Glock belonged to Henry VIII. A $600 Marlin Model 60 worth $300 as if it were actually worth $6000.:D Layers and layers of bubble wrap.....its a beautiful thing.

Compare that to your typical seller on GunBroker that wraps a $1000 gun in Sundays newspaper, then makes his own rifle box out of used UPS boxes.

i often attend estate auctions. Many people here believe that every gun bought through a dealer is "registered" in a federal database. Have watched bidders pay twice the worth of a firearm in order to obtain an "unregistered" gun. Watched a model 700 Remington with a cheap scope go for over $800.

There is something going on at GB. There was a 3 (out of 4) vol. set of bayonets Book that went for over $200. It had over 25 bids from 4-5 bidders.
I put my 4 vol. set and never got a single bid. There was al least 3-4 bidders that didn't "win" interested in the first auction!
When I bid on something (Rarely any more) if there are more than three bids, I don't even bother.
If I do bid on something I think what it's worth to me than bid 35-40% less.
With the Buyers premium, sales tax and shipping (maybe a transfer fee) it adds up quick.

We don't have live auctions around here any more the auction houses have found they don't have to show the items to the public saving the price of a large place to hold the auction. All they have now is a small warehouse & an office for people to pick up their items. They all have online auctions that really suck if you don't have good connections with the internet & get dropped right in the middle of the bidding. By the time you go though the system & get connection again the idem you were wanting is gone.
I have come to the conclusion that most of everything that they have for bid is going to be too high for me to bid on anyway.

Doesn't matter. $17 is double spot price even for 90%.

People get crazy over coins and ammo. I've stopped buying Silver American Eagles because the premium over spot is insane. I'll never make my money back when I sell them. Current spot s $21, but the price is $33. Ask a dealer what they're paying for American Eagles and it's like less than $25.

Guns and ammo are much the same. Especially ammo. Ammo is still scarce where I am, and it's selling above sticker price on the local forums. Guns that are in stock in local box stores are selling on local forums and at shows for more than even that. People need to take an Economics class.

I haven't been to any auctions lately, but I was blown away by the prices at the last Gun Collectors show. $2000 870s and 1100's, several grand for worn out lever actions, no matter which make, I told my wife that when I die, she needs to sell my guns there and she will be set.

was thinking the same thing!

The online auctions are crazy too. Been watching a Fajen stock for a Winchester model 88 on ebay: Auction ends today. Logged on this morning to discover that someone had bid $203. Oh, well.

Online can't get insane - saw this end last night on gunbroker!

We used to have a nearby (20 miles) auction house which got into guns in the early '90s. In the '90s I got some terrific deals just because nobody else was interested in them. I got burned a few times, too, but that was because I didn't have a chance to look at the item beforehand. In the 2000s prices began to creep up as the place started to advertise more and around 2010 they started listing their auctions on the internet. About 2013 I quit going altogether and just watched the auction online. In 2019 the auctioneer retired and the place closed. When it was local, you just had to outbid the folks there; when it went online, you had to outbid everybody in the US.

Wow. Don't really want to part with it, but maybe I could put my "ultra-rare" ANIB 19-3 up on the same site -- it's older than the 19-4, so I'm thinking $5500 - $6000?

We have an auction not far from here, they do vehicles, farm equipment, estate sales and also firearms. They've had some neat stuff come through, but after a buddy paid $1200 for a beater S&W Model 64, I concluded that I'm not rich enough for auctions.

There is no doubt that is a nice piece. I sold a Model 19 Not sure if it had a dash or not about 5-7 years ago for $775 with Walnut presentation box.

Yeah I dont think it deserves to be in the same catagory. I know I have spent thousands over somethings "worth" but its generally for a good cause.

ULTRA RARE is the key word for that particular seller.. Everything they sell is apparently "rare", "ultra rare" or some other stupid description.

I worked for a fellow like that. If he was selling a ‘76 Pinto, it was rare and had raced the 24 hours of Le Mans or some other nonsense.

Live auctions can be nuts. The excitement of that caller combines with egos to push some bidders well over the common sense line. $800 dollar guns selling for 2K is the result.

If you really want to see some buyers remorse go to a dinner auction with a pre-dinner cocktail hour. A buddy of mine, in concert with Jack Daniels and Adolf Coors, ended up in a bidding war over a very nice looking but proprietary Lazzeroni 8.59 Titan rifle. He walked away with it when it pushed North of $4,200 (45? Somewhere waaay up there.) He was proud as a peacock the rest of the night.

The next day he realizes that buying ammo for that mule-kicking blaster would be almost impossible, plus there were limited opportunities to actually need to use it, but he was stuck with it.

He later tried to trade me straight up from my CMP Rack-grade M1 Garand, I said no thanks.

So yeah, auctions are not often the sources of gun bargains anymore.

Stay safe.
Been there done that when I was young yeah I got the pistol and it took 42 years to finally get my money back(mostly)

I looked it up on GB nice, but not 5k nice. It will be a while before they get their money back, maybe not that long as there were 19 other bidders.
If you think that is insane look at this:
https://colorado.hibid.com/lot/1416...--30-06-sprg-ammo-on-enbloc-clips?ref=catalog
$325.00 for 40 rounds!
I've bought and sold things through them before, they're good folks and aren't far from me. That's not the first time I've seen AP ammo go at the insanity level there. I'm not sure why the craziness over that stuff
