Concealed carry permits gain popularity

The chances of running into a person who is legally concealing a firearm is increasing in New Mexico. That's because there has seen a 63 percent increase in people getting their concealed carry permits in the last year.

As expected, mostly men have concealed carry permits in New Mexico, but the number of senior citizens who carry guns is surprising.

In the five years that New Mexico's concealed carry law has been around, more than 11,000 men have held a license. But women are being certified as well. One out of every five licenses are being issued to a female.

"Just the increase in women who are looking for, again the ability to defend themselves, whether it is with concealed carry firearms or tasers, pepper spray, whatever, just basic self-defense knowledge has been increasing steadily for the last couple of years," said concealed carry instructor Roger Bell.

Of the 11,000, 255 men who've had a license at one time or another over the past five years, a quarter of them are 65 and older.

As for the 2,600 plus permits issued to women in that time, it's 12 percent or 322 senior citizen women packing heat in New Mexico.

As for the oldest people who've been issued concealed carry licenses in New Mexico, there are two women in Grant County who are at least 85-years-old. A man who is at least 95-years-old is also licensed to carry a gun in Dona Ana County.

The article didn't really have a point. Just sort of gave random numbers.
At least they didn't get the obligatory quote from someone saying, "What do you need a gun for? That's why we have police."

Sounds cool to me.
I'm heading for Santa Fe next week.
The more law abiding New Mexicans's carrying, the better.
The Land of Enchantment it truly is.
And I will OC as I always do in NM.Much, much more accepted there than at home.

Congrats to the NM citizens who are getting them. I think its something that needs to be taken advantage of if offered. :).

Just don't forget the liquor law.

You may carry in an establishment licensed to sell alcohol for OFF PREMISES consumption - but it MUST be concealed.

Otherwise, have a great time. Stay safe. And avoid the crazies up in Santa Fe. (They hear voices)

The 2006 population statistics says that New Mexico has not quite 2 million people. If so, the number of ccw owners is quite small relative to the total. Kind of surprising for a western state.
Wonder why.
Do they have open carry without ccw?
Or is it that there's so few folks outside of the few large towns that it's not considered necessary.
Anyone know?

Thank you,Rob!
This will be my 5th trip to New Mexico and it gets better every time.Been all over the State to Chaco Culture,Las Cruces,Carlsbad,Fort Sumner(Billy the Kid's grave)Los Alamos,Taos,Farmington and the Aztec ruins and so much more.
And so gun friendly!
I will watch out for the crazy voices again which I have heard at at the Plaza in Santa Fe and at Ranchos de Taos, particularly.
But nothing will stop me from continuing to go back to your most beautiful state!
To g.willikers,NM has only had CC for a short time.OC has been traditional here for eons.
Give the residents time to adjust to the new reality and the numbers will rapidly increase.
OC without a permit is legal in NM.

The ""but" seems to imply that "men" and "senior citizens" are separate catagories.

Good. Crime numbers will continue to fall.

Concealed carry in any state isn't huge numbers of the population, we're talking about single digit percents. Don't forget that you also have to remove a significant portion of the population as being ineligible because of age, criminal records, etc.

Good. Crime numbers will continue to fall.
When crime goes up because of economic hard times, will you be blaming concealed carry?

I worked for KOB. (past tense) I promise none of their writers are that clever.

I have to nit-pick.

Journalism 101: supply attribution.

As expected, mostly men have concealed carry permits in New Mexico, but the number of senior citizens who carry guns is surprising.

Surprising to whom? The many, many pre-Vietnam-era folks who enjoyed firearms? You, pippy?

Bah. I would say this is neither a good nor bad article. It's like jello that doesn't wiggle. Not news.

But good for New Mexico.

And for good reason. Here, Cen Ohio, women exceed men in violent assaults by 15 to 1. The ones that I've seen at the range take their practice much more seriously than the males I see. And as an observer, they are much better shots then their male counterparts.
