I have seen online at more than one place great prices for pistol/shotgun powder. For example, Midway had 1lb jug of Red Dot for 14.99 but I went to my local store and it was 21.99 lb.?!?!?!  Why the huge mark up? Next time I can by 4 lb jugs and it'll still be cheaper with the haz mat fee!

All powder I buy locally, 14-15 bucks a pound. Primers are 18.00/1000. But lately I cant get any Win large pistol. Dont want to pay Hazmat fees:cuss:

W 748

Last week I stopped at my local gun shop looking for 1 pound quantities of several powders. Winchester 748 was up to $25 so I didn't get any. All the powders were up proportionally. We have a gun show coming to Fort Wayne next week (Jan 6) so I guess that's where I'll get it as I don't want to pay hazmet fees either and don't have anyone to pool a purchase with.

BassPro Has the best powder prices as compared to local reloading stores. Prices vary per type. Prices have increased due to the cost of shipping HazMat which have increased. Everybody is on the higher price wagon. Primers are a different story. They charged me $30 for a box of a 1000. So I returned them for my money back. My local store was $19.95. You can mail order fron many sources but you'll pay the HazMat charges. The local stores do not buy in high enough quantities to have much savings. Thus you pay more. One local shop confided in me that he makes less than $3 per pound profit after paying HazMat shipping. Some stores dropped powder.

expect it to go up at least monthly. a bag of #8 skeet shot has gone from $15 to $25 in the last year. ALL ammo will go up Jan 1.

The Hazmat fees add a lot to the cost of powder and (usually) primers, regardless of whether you buy locally or mail order. The cheapest is to buy in bulk over the internet, either for yourself or go in with a reloading buddy or two. That will spread the hazmat fees over more pounds of powder, so it's not as bad.

You can sometimes find good buys on bulk powder from military surplus places, and this is often powder that was recovered from disassembled rifle ammo. The savings can be remarkable, if you're willing to work up a load based on that particular lot of powder. If you buy 1-4 eight pound jugs, it can be very worthwhile. Be mindful of local ordnances about storing flammables like gunpowder.

I buy my powder locally. It's usually $14 to $18 a pound. I like to support the local stores when I can, and they order in bulk so their hazmat fees are spread over many pounds of powder too. I have heard the price of powder and possibly primers is going up in 2007.

I buy a lot of stuff from www.MidwayUSA.com, but not powder and primers. The special shipping and hazmat fees are ridiculous. I think they take orders for another company and have them ship the powder and maybe a third company ships their primers?

I highly recommend Hi-Tech Ammo (link above) for primers. I bought 6000 primers recently and was pleasantly surprised with the cost. I think they ate the hazmat fees on my order. Hi-Tech also has very good prices on bullets. I bought 3000 nice pulled M193 bullets to reload .223 and they were 3.1 cents each.

Sportsmans warehouse is running right around $16-$18 per pound of regular powder. Vin is higher of course. They were out of WLP primers as well but I scored 1,000 at the gunshow for $16.95.

The gun shows around me never have gun powder or primers from what I have seen, but I think they are on a smaller scale than the ones where you guys are.

The local fire marshalls won't allow but a few lbs of powder inside most gun shows. Your best bet is to try to find a skeet/rifle club owned by a Govt. agency. They usually get a price break if you order kegs instead of lbs.

I read a post where someone bought some powder from MidwayUSA and when they got it the bottle had a Powder Valley sticker on it. I would cut out the middle man and look at Powder Valley. I was on their web site and the prices looked good to me. You just have to order enough so the hazmat fee doesn't hurt it to bad. I'm not positive but I think if you order primers also they have to ship separate so there will be hazmat on the primers also.

yep man, midway is just the seller, they charge the $20 hazmat fee and a $9.99 handling charge per powder/primer order,

the powder they sell is up to $30 higher than what its listed for at powder valley,

look at patsreloading, hi-techammo, gibrass, for surplus and pull down powders and bullets at a very good price, and will pay hazmat if you buy 4 or more 8lb jugs,

natchez, wideners also have surplus powders at a decent price and run specials on the hazmat fee.

I can get powder for around $16'ish out the door locally. The trick is to buy large amounts to get the cost down. I just got 25 lbs keg of solo 1000 from a guy that visits trap clues in the area, it was $255 + tax. Thats just over $10 per pound, I use solo 1000 for 12 gauge and am going to try it for all my pistol rounds, if I like it for pistol this will replace the one pound bottles of this or that pistol powder. I have been using WC844 & WC846 for rifle, I got this cheap in quantity last year. If this surplus powder drys up I will be purchasing the largest keg of H335 to replace it.

That hazmat fee is one of the biggest rip offs.

Why is it imposed?? To cover "insurance"??

When did you hear of a load of primers/powder expolding? Just like 'blood running in the streets' caused by crazies carrying guns.

In early Nov, I ordered 53 Lbs of Powder, Primers from Powder Valley. Got 3 other guys to go in with me to split up the cost. Anyway, Hazmat, Shipping and Ins was a follows:

Hazmat: $20.00
Shipping: $22.00
Ins: $ 3.00

The primers and powder were all included in the $20.00 Hazmat. The entire shipment was sent FedX ground.

Great Service from Powder Valley, and if you can find a way to do a group buy to split the cost, this is the way to go.

FWIW,

Paul
