Local walmart has rised 5.56 prices

Why on earth would you pay over $10 a box for XM193? A quick search online just now revealed well over thirty retailers that have various types of 5.56 and .223 ammo, including XM193 for less than $8.50/box. Wal mart hasn't had decent prices on ammo for several years now.

Hmmm, honestly, I don't know anyone paying such close attention to big-box retail ammo prices that they'd especially notice if WalMart raised the price a few cents a box.

Heck - Bill Miller's in TX has raised its prices on its BBQ sandwich. Gas goes up and down. 50 cents is not the great conspiracy. Academy and Cabela's are swimming in 223.

The co-pay on my meds just went up to rather nasty levels. I wish it were 50 cents.

Compared to when a box of Blazer 9mm was 3.99 - so what.

Retailers raise their prices not only because demand allows them to do so, but many times it's because their costs have also risen. Wal-Mart is no exception. My LGS has been low on certain ammo because they at first refused to pay the increase their wholesaler put on that ammo. Now, because they cannot get it any where else, they have broke down and bought it, and have to increase their prices accordingly. Nature of the beast.

I stopped by a walmart this morning. I couldn't find what I was looking for, but I wandered by the ammo counter on the way out. No .22 to be seen. a little 9mm & .45, a decent amount of 7.62x39 if you like Tula.

And they had the AE 120rd 5.56 cans for $80 and 750 rd ammo cans of AE or Federal for, uhm $500... Not really $500, it was $497.72 or something, but still freaking outrageous. And don't tell me that Walmart got stuck with panic prices from their distributor because they don't work that way.

I think I'll be doing more online ammo buying in the near future. Even when Cabela's has the stuff on sale they're still ~10-15% over what gunbot.net finds (for 5.56/.223, .45 & 9mm which I about all I buy). The only time I buy ammo at a store these days is when I Cabela's has Black Hills SMKs cause those cost about the same in-store or online.

The price of centerfire ammo at Wal-Mart has not been good for a few years now. It's always better to buy a case or half a case somewhere else and get a discount.

Gunbot has lots of cheaper 223, so why the 50 cent panic at WalMart?

How much does the OP shoot that 50 cent will break the bank?

There are only two reasons to buy ammo at Walmart:

1) You forgot to order ammo at a decent price and are on the way to the range, or

2) You are camping the ammo counter waiting for your 3-box ration of 22LR.

The last time I bought XM193 was about five months ago. I got some Federal LC and some Independence brand. Both were 40 cents per round delivered. I won't be buying any 5.56 from WM at 60 cents per round after tax.

I had never before been treated as badly as how my local Walmart treated me last year. I even complained to the store manager, the district manager (James Valenti), the regional manager (Cheryl Lester), the 800 number, emailed the corporate executives and even complained to the BBB. Guess what, nobody cared. None of them would even return my calls. I was polite and professional, they just couldn't be bothered to talk to me.

Needless to say, I don't shop there unless everything else is closed.

Pay a buck more and buy from your LGS or Gander Mountain. Or, save a buck and buy online. Don't support the worst retailer in the world.

So buy it somewhere else.

Why does everyone feel necessary to start Walmart threads?
If you had read posts 1,3 and 8 you should have gathered that I was looking for information. I was asking if anyone else had noticed a price increase in hopes of determining if this was a price increase limited to local Walmarts or a chain wide increase. Why? If Walmart raises prices we can expect to see others to do the same if not raise prices higher. If prices are rising then we will see it across the board from reloading supplies to factory ammo.

No. I have noticed case prices steadily going down.

Last I checked my local WM was still selling Federal LC and Independence XM193 at $10.47/box. Even that's far too high and they have more of it unsold than any other caliber... but most of the shelves are fairly empty except for shot shells.

I have a friend, retired from Government Service, that works at the Sporting Goods section of our local Wal-Mart. He tells me that the firearms and much of the ammo is bought from the same wholesaler that the local LGSs use. Exception is some of the branded ammo and bulk shotgun shells.

I did read posts 1,3 & 8. What Walmart does is not lockstep with the industry. Their contracts are totally separate from the rest of the industry.
If you use that great, big resource known as the WWW, you can see that prices are steadily falling on 223, not rising, since the panic buying has tapered down and a lot of inventory is starting to fall into shelves again.
Brass-cased Federal or PMC is easily found for $.40 a round all over.
