Logic on not keeping a gun within arms reach at bedside

I have my XD-9 right next to me on my nightstand and my ar 3 feet away from me. I keep the XD with a full mag in but I do not chamber a round. I also have it in a leather holster with a snap closure. The AR is unloaded with a 20 round mag loaded right next to it. I sleep in the attic of a 4 story house and have a dog so I would have plenty of warning of a break in and time chamber a round or get the AR ready to rock-n-roll. I would take my XD if I heard a bump in the night and went to investigate but If I heard members of my family downstairs in trouble I would not hesitate to grab my AR. Using the AR would be a last resort however, because of the "legal" ramifications along with having to prove that my mag is in fact pre-ban. Damn NY:cuss:

Best to keep your loaded gun (revolver is my choice) on the floor next to the bed. If you hear an intruder, you can roll over to the floor (a good tactical move..hiding you from the line of fire) and grab your gun. The drop on the floor move would also serve to fully wake you up.

Keep a night light in the room OUTSIDE your bedroom. If there is an intruder, he would sillouette against the light. It would be easier to find your target.

I think that the whole idea of having to go look for it forces you to be awake enough to use it. I'm one of those people that wake up ready to go, my wife... not so much. My gun is right next to the bed- hers is in a drawer.

Cocked and locked 1911 Compact in the headboard cubbyhole. Never had a problem with gun fondling in my sleep.

I'd keep a 12 ga. pump in a scabbard on the side of the headboard, but the wife wouldn't go for it. Hell, if I were single, I'd have iron stashed all over the house, garage, basement, etc.

The "stats"

I think it was well and repeatedly put before that it is a matter of individual choice - "know thyself"!.

I was really expecting someone to indicate or provide some reliable statistics to help me make my choice.

Hey All!,
I'm a Husband and father of 2. I have educated my son (7 years old) about firearms, and have a 2 year old. I cant say I have the liberty to keep a firearm at my bedside as my kids wake me up! I don't think I could make a reasonable and responsible way to keep my kids away from the guns without keeping them out of reach. I have thought about safes and whatnot, but in the SHTF scenario I think I leave my situation in the 'paws' of my K9. I do however have a 110 LB border patrol (not mexico...he's not that stoopid ;) German Shepard. I trust my dog to warn me to grab my gun's in any situation that my endanger my family. That being said, I try to take every measure I can to keep all firearms from my children. Education is #1 to me with my son, but one can never be too safe :)
