Hey all!

I've been a long time reader of THR forums, and a first time poster. It is certainly an entertaining and informative website!

I unfortunately live in communist New York (for school only), although I am still a legal Ohio resident. I am interested in buying a long gun (not an "assault rifle") for target shooting but am unsure of New York laws and how they relate to nonresidents. Is it legal for me to possess a long gun in the state or am I forbidden from doing so? I have checked many sources but haven't been able to find a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance!

Sean

I'm originally from N.Y. -haven't lived there for a while.
Here is a VERY brief, possibly out of date synopsis of N.Y. State's somewhat odd gun laws:

1) Long guns : Outside of NYC and posssibly other municipalities basically, no restrictions except certain "assault" firearms and magazines. possession of "ordinary" long gun (non assault) by out of state residents OK.
Basically, no loaded long guns allowed "In or upon" a vehicle.
Purchase of "ordinary" long gun is not regulated beyond federal law.

2) the odd part- License/permit needed to "possess" or maybe even handle a handgun. permiting is done by county or municipality. It can actually be easy to get a "carry" permit in some areas and permits are often granted for LIFE.

The general rule for NYS is that you can own any longarm, with the exception of those categorized as "assault weapons". You can follow the rules of the old Federal AWB to determine what you can and cannot buy. Certain cities and counties though have their own rules.
