Long Range Rifle Project

I'd like to set up a Long range rifle, maybe from scratch, maybe not. I'm just looking for ideas.

The calibers I'm interested in are 30-06 or .308 Nato.

Should I buy a rifle and add on to it, or buy a separate barrel, stock, scope ect?

I'd like to be able to make, with proper training, shots to 1000 meters accurately. While price is ALWAYS a consideration, It shouldn't be the first consideration.

I'm thinking simple bolt action like a Rem 700 or similar.

I'm interested in your opinions and ideas.

There are about a million ways you can go in terms of gun and equipment. However, if you're just starting out, it's hard to go wrong with a heavy barreled 308 and a good scope with target knobs.

I have heard some interesting ideas with the venerable 30-06. Don't count out that caliber, handloaded heavy bullets make for some long range shooting but I am just scratching the surface. Cases are easy to come by and the ought six is has a very flexible usage. Just because it's an oldy doesn't mean it's a goodie.

While the '06 will work, and work quite well, it is a handloading proposition only, while suitable match grade .308 ammo is readily available. Everybody should have a .308 precision rifle, what you get after that is up to you.

The way I understand it, Black Hills loaded 168gr match for the .30-06.

For the money, for a factory rifle, I'd get a Savage. For my left-handed .243Winchester, I got the Model 11GL which is the wood-stocked "hunter" series. If I were looking for a .308, for what I do with a rifle, I'd probably get another Model 11GL. However, it's not the heavy barrel so many bench/long-range shooters go for. For sights, I'd do the same thing I talk about with my .243... I'd mount the Williams FP/TK and go from there.

Don't know about Black Hills, but you can buy Federal Gold Medal Match using the 168SMK in .30-06. Only problem is, it is loaded down to .308 velocities. If you are going to do that with a .30-06, go with a .308. Where the '06 really shines is with 190gr and heavier bullets that can take advantage of the increased case capacity using slower powders.

Savage 12FV the stock is cheap but works, should be able to find a new one for $450ish.

I recommend the Savage in .308, but others like the Remington 700 more.

You've seen pics of my savage, scorp. And you've probably seen my 500yd group. If not, you know where to find the pics, and if you don't find 'em, letmme know. The thing's a tack hammer, and I've done absolutely nothing to it. It shot like that right out of the box. I endorse the FP10's wholeheartedly. Especially with the LE accutrigger. Best thing since sliced bread.
