I am wanting to get into long range target shooting, 600 to 1000yards.
What rifle, caliber, and scope would you consider? I have looked and Savage, Remington, and Tikka. My favorite is the Remington Tactical. They have two versions. The first is the urban swat type with fluted 24" version. The second is the 26" smooth barrell.

After a visit to my local gun store this is what I was told....
Remington is probably best choice as all custom shops can build off of Remington. The caliber they recommended is .308.

I think you will probably get about the same recommendation as the gun store. .308 seems like the popular long range caliber. I would go with the longer barrel to squeeze a little more velocity out of it for shooting long range.

I would certainly not go with a .308, any of the 6mm or 6.5's will put it to shame. Personally I shoot a 28" barrelled Savage 12 FV in .243, it keeps 1/2 MOA out to 600 yards when the wind dies down a little. I also like the Savage for the ability to change out barrels yourself, if you shoot a barrel out, or just want to go to a different caliber, it's literally a 5 minute job. Having said that if you are going to shoot in F-TR class then you have to shoot .223 or .308. If you are going to shoot rarely at 1000 yards then I'd go with a 24", but I do like 26-28" to maximize velocity for 1000 yard shooting, every little bit helps.

Browningguy is obviously a guy that does the thing. Everything he said is right on the money. If you are going to shoot at 1000 in F Class look at the 6mm and 6.5mm. If you are going to shoot the F-TR then you are locked into the .308. The only reason guys are shooting the 308 in long-range is because they don’t want to use the 223 for that far down-range and the F-TR rules say they have to shoot the 308. Darn, I said it out loud. I hope lightening doesn’t strike me.........................Oh, least I forget, Savage makes a darn good rifle at a darn good price. I shoot a Savage F Class in 6.5-284, but, I have a friend that shoots at 1,000 with a Savage BVSS in 243 and he holds his own.

The reason that the 308 is though of as a long range cartridge is because of the reputation of military sniper/target shooters. The reason that they shot 7.62 is becuase that was the standard caliber of the us military at the time. It does shoot every well but there are better cartridges fo long range work. The 6.5mm class works very well with out the recoil of a 300winmag/.

My long range gun (back when I was doing that) was a pre '64 winchester model 70 bull gun (13 lbs. ) in .30-06. It worked very well for me at 600, 800, 900, and 1,000 yds.
I was shooting at west coast ranges, which tend to be a bit breezy. A 6mm may be better in calmer conditions, but imo the heavier .30 cal bullets are superior in the wind.

Thanks

Thank you guys for the input. I have not thought about a 6.5mm mainly because the remington tactical rifle I looked at only came in .223 and .308.

6.5mm what ? x55 Mauser ? 260 Rem ? Grendel ? Creedmore ?

I have no experience of any, except the 6.5x55. I think it would work well at 1000 yards when used with 140gr bullets, slow powder and a long barrel.

I have 3 long range rifles. Remington 700 Police in .308, CDL in .30-06 and Springfield M1A.

All can get to 600 easily and reliably. The Remington 700's are fully capable of 1,000 yards.

What are you going to do with the gun? Are you competing? a 308 is fine fine choice for shooting longe range accurately.

i was also thinking of getting a gun that was capable of 600-1000 yards accurately. i was thinking of picking up a savage and putting a new barrel in 6.5-284 and a stock on it from sharpshooter supply. then accurizing it (lapping, truing, ...) and see what it will do.
