longe range target rifle

I also know that a properly equipped rifle will be expensive. You have to pay to play. Recoil is not a factor. None of my current rifles are equipped with muzzle brakes including my Ultra mags. I do plan on having LRT equipped with one to make it more sensible for target shooting.

I have a general Idea of how I want the rifle set up as far as style. I am looking for more information on differant builders. I am also eager to learn more on what need to be done to the rifle to make it better. I have read that some manufactures recomend some stuff like fluting the barrel and others do not. I am looking for information on what is functional and what is just marketing gimmicks to drive prices up.

You might want to contact Shane Elder. He owns Elder Custom Rifles of Carlisle, AR. He builds his own rifles and holds several MSSA Bench Records. He builds good stuff. The current rage here is the .257 Weatherby necked up to 6.5mm. Good luck and shoot a bunch. Enjoy life.

I had my rifle built by Kevin Rayhill of Stockade Gunstocks. He is big on Savages if that works for you. If not he can work on other stuff. He carries a 1 MOA guarantee at 300 yds on full build rifles. He is very reasonable in pricing and if you call and talk to him he will tell you what his experience is in what works and what doesn't with no BS.

I may or may not get into public competition. I understand that a lot of calibers of rile are capable of shooting 1000 + yds. I am looking for something that is not being pushed to its outer limits.

If you were to get into LR comp, what type would you get into? This will make a big difference on the type of rifle you will want to purchase. Do you shoot from a bench with bags at known ranges or do you shoot in different positions at multiple targets/distances? If your shooting preference is more tactical, GA Precision will not be beat for consistant quality!

With the LR rifles I have (308's & 300wm), 1000 yds is getting out there to my limits. Some of the 6mm to 6.5mm bench rest stuff probably does a little better at the 1000 yd line, but I'm can't say for sure. I do not have a 338 L, but I have shot one and it was a impressive rifle. They are known for longer reach, but tend to cost a few thousand more than the 30cal stuff.

You already mentioned 338 lm, Its in your head so go for it. For 2 grand you can buy a savage 110 bat, good gun very accurate, and so heavy there is no kick, mine with bipods and bushnell elite scope is 18.5 lbs. ammo is high but reloading takes care of some of that. Brass is very high though, also it can be reloaded in a standard press, it cant be trimmed in a forster original case trimmer, nor will it fit in a regular kinetic bullet puller.

Is this 338L? What kind of grouping are you getting at LR?

Yes that is 338 lm, It can also be chambered in 300 mag. It was purchased in the dead of winter and we havent shot at long range. at 200 yards laying down I could touch bullet holes when I was test firing after I mounted the scope (not impressed with the bushnell elite scope). Once it warms up we might get to find out what it will do at some distance. I am not a fan of the accutrigger either, or savage for that matter I never liked them, but the ba is a nice gun and noone thinks its a savage. It is the most accurate gun I have ever fired. The only place on the gun that says savage is the bolt the rest is covered by the scope mounting platform.

well after several weeks of research and debate on a rifle I have learned a lot. I have came up with tons of information from multiple sources. I have studied ballistics and charts til I have gotten several headaches. I have checked into several builders. I have decided that a lot of the hot calibers are hype and over priced for what they can do. I have found that components for most of these calibers are absurdly expensive. Ihave contacted Mcmillan to set up a custom 50 cal. I have found sources for components that make it affordable to shoot. It rivals most anything with potential and performance.

I chose their repeater action with 32 inch fluted match barrel with slimline brake, jewel trigger in a customized stock. It will be topped with Night Force 12-42x 56mm scope. [If you are gonna play... PLAY BIG!!!!]

I suggest you consider doing long range competitions. Find out what kind of matches are in your area; F-Open, F/TR, High Power, Palma, etc. and get a rifle that is both legal and well equipped for the matches you want to shoot.

I shoot F/TR with a Savage 308. In F-Class, the F/TR rules allow only 223 and 308 cartridges, so if you have something else you're in F-Open where 6.5/284 is hard to beat. None of the matches I'm familiar with allow muzzle brakes.

You might want to do some lurking at http://www.usrifleteams.com/lrforum/index.php

For 1000 yards you ahve a number of choices:

.260 Rem, 6.5x47 Lapua, 6-6.5x47 Lapua, 30-284 Win, 6 BR, 6 Dasher, 6BRX, 30 BR in a fast twist barrel, so on and so forth. Unless you are going to use a good quality can, I wouldnt reccomend a .338 LPM. The recoil is quite stiff.
