Sadly I may never be able to afford my beloved FAL and owing to the fact that my only centerfire rifle is an M44 I've come to my senses and decided it's time to choose a bolt action. I'm looking for a .308 Win rifle that has some drop at the heel similar to the Remington 700. I looked at a Tikka T3 that was very nice however I can't remember how much it was. My budget is around $500.00 (rifle only) and I'd prefer a new rifle. I'm planning on putting some decent glass on it so sights aren't needed, however any commentary on cost of rings/ mounts/ glass on your rig would be much appreciated. I'm looking for at least 1 MOA accuracy from prone and I just can't stand Rugers.

Which one? I have been looking at the 10FP which seems like it'll kick butt. What do you have it scoped with?

CZ-550 American
No iron sights but comes with rings. The LUX version of the CZ-550 (not sure they still make that) may be more to your liking as it has a european style buttstock, is a bit shorter I believe and has the drop you desire.

Very accurate in .308. I get accuracy of around 1.5 MOA off a sandbag with milsurp ammo. Never tried it with factory .308. I imagine it would shoot much better then. Shot from a proper bench rest with quality ammunition I'd anticipate better than 1 MOA accuracy.

It is a light and very handy Bolt Action I highly recommend to anyone. $504 is what I paid but it can probably be had for less if you shop around.

Another option you may want to look at are the Savage Package guns which is Rifle + Scope Package. The scope is a Simmons. Most Savage package gun street prices are less than or right around $500.
Here's one I especially like: Savage Arms 11FXP3 The suggested retail is $516 which means it can be had for around $400 in OKC.

I like Remington 700s. You can find new 700 ADL's with the synthetic stock in the $300's now that the line has been replaced by the SPS. I don't like the standard synthetic stock so I'd sell it on a forum for $30-$40 and buy a take off wood stock for the same amount. I prefer Leupold dual dovetail mounts and bases, although Talley lightweights are very popular with the cool people and are cost effective as well, with either combination costing about $40 total. Add a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 for $299 shipped and you're around $700 total for a very decent rig. The only downside I see is that the matte finish on the synthetic ADLs is more of a "rust attractant" finish than a "rust resistant" finish, so keep up with it.

Stevens 200, made by Savage. Most people are getting them for around $250 new, half your budget limit. The biggest cost-cutting difference is that it doesn't have the AccuTrigger, but like the other Savage rifles, it does have the free-floated barrel and dual pillar bedded action. I've heard from several other people on savageshooters.com that have one that it's just as accurate as Savage's other rifles. If you don't like the gray stock, it's simple enough to paint it. With the low price, it will be a lot easier to get higher quality glass for it:

As far as mounts go, my favorite set-up is Burris Signature dual dovetail rings and bases. The dual dovetail system is very strong, and the rings inserts won't scratch the scope's finish or put any awkward stress on the tube, and they allow for initial adjustment of the windage and elevation without using up the scope's internal adjustments, which can then be used for the final 'fine tuning' of your zero. I had these on my 10FP-LE2 and it was a great set-up.

I'm also thinking of getting one for myself for deer, but I can't decide on a .243, 7mm-08, or .308. Each caliber has it's own appeal.

Regardless, it'll have to wait until after Christmas. :(

Looking at the T3 is a great start in the right direction;)

I have a T3 Lite in 308Win and it easily shoots 0.5MOA with factory Black Hills 168gr BTHP Match ammo.
It's my idea of the perfect deer gun. With my Leupold VX-I scope the whole setup weighs 7 lbs. Thats half a pound less than most bolt action rifles without the scope and it shoots as well as many heavy barreled guns (as long as you're not shooting more than 5 rounds without a 5 minute break or a full minute between each shot).

Think when you have seen 243,7mm-08 on sale.....
308 is the most inexpensive round that you can get, in those choices, and it will always be available.....

You will not beat the Savage Tactical models for out of the box accuracy for less than $500. I really don't think it can be beat by a meaningful amount at any price. It makes me look like a good rifleman. Mine only has a $90 simmons scope and I can stay within 1 inch at 100 yards all day from a sandbag rest, and mine is the hard to find 16 in. (maybe 18) inch barrel model.
The thing is deadly, surgical accurate. Take a good look at it before you buy. One pull of that accutrigger and you will be sold!

you mean 20"?;)

By the time you spend $500 on a rifle and another $300-$500 on a scope and rings, you could have that FAL you desire for the same amount of money.

My gawd Savage rifles are ugly. However, they are known to have the best out of the box accuracy around. In fact, they have a better accuracy guarantee than Ruger, Remington, Winchester, or Weatherby. You don't need to take my word for that because you can call customer service at each company and find out for yourself.

Savage Model 10

I've got a Savage .308 that shoots like a dream. It's definately more accurate than I am. No accutrigger, as it's an older one, but it still performs well. Got a couple deer with it and a whole lot of small groups on paper. I'm not going to knock the other brands as I've got a few Remingtons that I like very well, but for the money you give and the rifle you get, Savages are hard to beat.

I know a fella selling Tikka T3's NIB for $500 in 7mm08, 308, and I think .243 if you are interested I will do some research and get you his contact #-I just bought a Tikka T3 lite 308 and LOVE it so far! One ragged hole at 100 yards with factory 150 corelock ammo!

e-mail me at [email protected] if you want me to try and locate the contact info...
