My T-series Hi-Power and a pre-B CZ75 are my best 9mm guns. Both like a 115g FMJ and 6.0g of Unique.

I voted Taurus PT-99 for the adjustable sights and its cocked and locked capabilities.

The Glock 17 is a good choice if it fits you and/or you can shoot it well. Glocks are by far the guns I shoot worst, they are very accurate off sandbags so I know there is nothing wrong with my examples, (17 & 21) its just the fit and the trigger doesn't work well for me.

The Taurus/Beretta actually feels clunkier in my hand than the Glock, but I shoot them very well.

Based I this I's strongly suggest trying before you buy instead of letting the fanboys vote and tell you what to get.

Although I'm partial to Glocks and they make great range/dual use guns, for a range only gun, I think I'd go Beretta. My 92FS Inox is virtually unbelievably accurate and that's with fixed sights.

Long drawn out opinion alert.

I own a glock, and maybe I'm a bit of a fanboi. But the first time I picked one up, it was not at all confidence-inspiring. The grip was thick and slick, the trigger was weird (the break felt... uhh.. crappy?), and the muzzle felt way too light (even though it was a 17C!). I was SURE I wouldn't be able to shoot it as well as some of the other guns I was using in that same session. Those other guns were: Beretta 92FS, a Colt 1911 Mark-something, a P220, a P228, and a very old P7M8. Well, color me wrong. The top honors were a tie between the P220 and the Glock 17C - not necessarily in that order. I shot both of these extremely well. So well did the Glock suit me that I was able to determine, after only two mags, that the first (hand-cycled) round was printing just a hair to the right!

For some reason, this particular P228 was nowhere near as accurate as any of the other guns on this day, with this ammo... When I mentioned this to the rangemaster, he took offense. Turns out he was carrying one as his personal firearm, and he insisted I try his. I shot out his mag, which was loaded with Black Talons, and I gotta say.. his shot twice as bad as the range gun using cheapo ammo! God knows why, cuz I was driving tacks with the P220.

I did not shoot the Beretta quite as accurately as the Glock, but that was partially due to the horribly tiny and miserably thin iron sights. The trigger was great, and it was very fast on the followup shots.

My vote for a 9mm RANGE gun is the Beretta, cuz it's plenty accurate, feels wonderful, and looks great. It also has all the bells and whistles - DA/SA, decocker, and safety. For max accuracy... well, you gotta try them for yourself, because with pistols, results will vary with the user!

If you want the best accuracy, consider a single action auto in 9mm. Better, and 100% totally consistent trigger pulls on each shot make for better shooting guns.

If you can find one, a Star Model 30 is great. Not handsome or well finished but will feed anything that says 9mm. Bought one years ago and it has never hung up with anything fired through it.

Range accuracy?

I'd pick a CZ 75B or a Sig if you want to spend twice as much.

I enjoy shooting a BHP more than either. It just fits me.

Taurus PT 99 or 92

Ted---
I originally voted for the Beretta 92FS INOX. But I am also looking for a good 9mm. I like the Mag capacity on the Taurus Much Better! [17 for the Taurus and 10 for the Beretta] Two gun salesman I have talked two, also preferred the Taurus pointing out the Lifetime Guarantee and Mag Capacity. I own a Taurus 24/7 9mm [bought it for my wife, she really owns it] It has been a Excellent gun. I prefer a 4 inch Barrel. [I like a 9mm to double as a car Gun sometimes. I will rotate it with one of my .45's] I have narrowed my search down to the SW-MP 9mm and the Beretta Px4 Storm 9mm. I Own an MP .40 and it is an Extremely Excellent gun in every way. Especially ergonomics and Reliability. The Berreta Storm has a great reputation and after checking them out, it is a tough decision-still trying to decide so far. I hope this helps!:)

Wait a second, if you're talking about the Beretta 92 vs. the Taurus 92, the magazine capacity is virtually identical. The particular gun you're looking at might have 10 round magazines, but full capacity (15 rounds) and extra capacity (17 rounds - Mec-gar) are readily available. Some Taurus 92s ship with 17 round magazines (these are most likely Mec-gar contract magazines), but the original design capacity is 15. I have both BTW. Both are about equally accurate and reliable. Fit and finish is noticably better on the Beretta and it's much smoother. The Taurus has an advantage in that the safety/decocker is on the frame rather than slide - alot of people like that.

Hi Southpaw.

On the Berreta website they have the 92FS and 92FS INOX listed with 10rd Mag's. The M9A1 is listed as having a 15rd Mag. I was looking at a Taurus PT 92 at Cabela's it came with two 17rd Mags. From what every one says, including yourself, the Berreta and Taurus Function the same and are equally reliable. Thank you for the tip on the finish. If I decide to go with a 5 inch Barrel it would be the Taurus or Berreta. I really enjoy the Taurus 24/7 platform, so I am inclined more towards Taurus then Berreta. But I prefer a finish that looks nice and holds up well. I sure do not mean to hi-jack this thread.:uhoh: Have a Good one!

Trust me, the INOX will work with the standard capacity 15 & 17 round mags. I have no idea why they list it as only 10 rounds on the website, only that Beretta doesn't seem to realize what a resource the internet is and therefore doesn't pay much attention. Don't ever try to e-mail them. I suspect that this listing is a remnant of the old ASW ban days that they haven't bothered to update.. There was talk over at the Beretta forum that all the INOX guns had been discontinued. The Vertecs are gone from the website, already.

On the Taurus and the finish: Taurus does offer the 92 in a stainless version. It has a polished stainless slide and a matched finish aluminum alloy frame. That finish would likely hold up best of all the Taurus finishes. I don't particularly care for polished stainless and prefer the matte finish on the Beretta.

I voted for the Glock 17 for the following reasons:

1. Price
2. Factory and aftermarket availibility of parts.
3. Reliability
4. Durability
5. Very forgiving of lack of maintainence
6. Ease of service/repair.
7. More accurate than 90% of shooters.

I don't drink the koolaid, but the above atributes are indisputable. I have dozens of pistols and only three of them are Glocks. FWIW.

I'm finding it very difficult to decide. I'm leaning toward the Glock 17, the Beretta 92FS in blue, and the Taurus PT-99 in blue (but might be better finish-wise with a stainless version). The foregoing is not necessarily in order of preference. I do not have issues with ergonomics of these guns.

I have shot both the Glock and the Beretta. Between them I prefer the Beretta. I had a G17 years ago and sold it! I just didn't like its looks-esthetically. But if I were in LE I would not hesitate to carry a Glock.

Then again, I wouldn't hesitate either with the Beretta in condition 2 with the safety engaged or disengaged. But this thread subject is about RANGE guns in 9mm!

The PT-99 apparently permits cocked-and-locked - Condition 1. This would be really nice for steel challenge and other competitive events I'm planning to participate in.

Some Marines at the indoor range last night did not like the Beretta all that much. FTE's and similar problems. Hard to believe them-and, it was hard not to...

They liked the XD in .45 cal. One really liked the Glocks in 9mm. One commented the Marines are trying out .45 1911's over in Iraq.

I've never shot the Baby Desert Eagle? I put a question mark because I do not recall if I shot it at my range, which has it for rental! It may have been out for repairs when I asked for it. It's supposed to be a great shooter but I don't care for its looks all that much.

Limited to ten-round magazines here in California, so mag capacity is not an issue for me and others in my State. Anyway, thanks for votes and posts thus far, and keep them coming!

My choice is the Taurus PT92 SS (Stainless)..

which is on sale at my local dealer. It's at a good price and I will be going there tomorrow to beat the crowds and put one on order.

I have since eliminated the Glock 17 (concerns about reloads, polygonal rifling and lead reloads, appearance) and the Baby Desert Eagle (I already have a CZ-75B and the BDE is a clone); also, based on a post here, the BDE may or may not have polygonal rifling.

That left the Beretta and the Taurus.

Since the 'sale Taurus' is stainless, there shouldn't be any 'finish' issues with it as there apparently are some with the one in blue.

I was surprised the poll thus far has greatly favored the Berettas over the Taurus'.

Thank you to all for your participation.

I believe that Taurus PT 92 stainless is still on sale at my local dealer (Turner's Outdoorsman), and for those of you who might be interested, I believe the sale ends today.

The new sale ad is already posted on the website, but last week's sale on the Taurus semi-auto should still be available. $399.99
