I went to the range the other day with my buddy and he has a Remington 700. I had never shot a .308 up to that point but I had a ton of fun doing so and now he has me hooked on getting a .308. What are some good models out there to check out besides the Remington 700? I'm ok with a semi-auto or bolt action. Would most likely use it for long range shooting and eventually hunting. Any input would be appreciated!

I'm a huge fan of the Marlin XS7. I have one in a Boyd stock with a Weaver 4-10x44 and a Caldwell bipod. Got to stretch its legs a few weeks ago and was minute of basketball at 600 yards with cheap Brown Bear 145gr ammo. All in all, I have a shade over $550 into it.

I think you need to at least look at the Savage line of rifles, they have a wide variety of models in .308, from classic wood stocked hunting rifles to police-style sniper rifles and are famous for being both great values and exceptionally accurate out of the box.

There are of course lots of other excellent choices for a good .308 rifle (Browning X-Bolt, Ruger M77, Weatherby Vanguard or Winchester Model 70 for example). You can hardly go wrong with any of them.

A price range would help, I just got the Ruger American in .308, and could not be happier with the features and quality for the price.

I'd be willing to pay up to $500-800. However, if I can find a quality one for cheaper I surely won't complain but I won't rule our spending a bit more if it means a better rifle.

I just bought a tikka t3 hunter in 308. It shoots great. The bolt is incredibly smooth. I wouldn't buy a newer model Remington 700, they are not as good quality as the old ones.

I have 4 .308s. I like the Rem 788 best, Rem 760 next, then a Win Model 88, with a Kimber bringing up the rear.
More dollars do not always mean more satisfaction

Well that pretty much rules out any semi-autos, Remington makes some fine rifles. I have a couple of 700's in .308 with no complaints except for the triggers but those can be replaced easily.

I got a Mossberg 100 ATR in 308. Bought it just because it was cheap and I didn't have a 308. I was pleasantly surprised. Very light, short barrel, shoots as straight as any other. Joy to carry in the woods, 22" barrel. I've decided to keep it. You can load it for short range woods hunting or load it for longer range field hunting. I enjoy it very much.

My friend has the savage 308, and that is an amazingly accurate rifle

I dont know how they get the price at that level

Definitely +1 for the Ruger American .308, for the price I'm in love with mine...it's fitted with a Buckmaster 3-9x40 and just a damn fine rifle for the price if you ask me.

Definitely at least look at Savage. I couldn't be happier with mine.

That said, I think I am about to buy a Ruger American in .308 myself. The reviews are just too good to pass up one for the price. Says I.

You can get a DPMS LR-308 at Walmart for $800ish. They have to order it from their catalog.

That's as accurate as you'll find in semi...

I love my savage axis XP. And for $329 in camo with a scope it doesn't get much cheaper. Definitely look into savages especially the ones with the accu trigger for your price range. I have heard nothing but good things about the Ruger American but have no personal exp with them.

Before you go out and buy one, I urge you to go out and shoot a lever action rifle. Both the Marlin 336 in 30-30 and the Browning BLR in 308. I absolutely fell in love with my lever action after 20 to 30 years of shooting. I never thought this would happen. If you are married to the 308, the BLR is worth consideration. If you are married to a classic lever action which will keep you quite happy hunting and punching holes, the 30-30 Marlin (or Winchester) is the way to go. I would go try these two out before buying a bolt action as you may find an ever greater love out there. It's a good problem to have.

If you are looking for a heavy barrel look at the CZ 550 varmiter. IMHO it is one of the best out of the box shooters for the money.

A bolt action is going to be a lot easier for a new guy to learn and master. Easier to mount a scope on. Easier for lots of things - and cheaper.

Savages are quite possible the best bargain for a rifleman's dollar. They're very accurate and rugged.

I'm a Winchester man, myself. But Remingtons do have more aftermarket support if you decide to upgrade the stock or want a long-range scope base with some elevation built in.

Don't overlook the Weatherby Vanguard either. They are hard to beat for quality, accuracy, and price.

If your interested in a semi then the FNAR should be on the short list, for a bolt action you cannot beat the Tikka. As mentioned Remington's are not as good as they once were but they still sell a lot of rifles and with a trigger job they can be made much more user friendly...
