Looking for a .375 H&H

I am looking to get a .375 H&H rifle just to have and to get used to so I can some day take it on safari. I really like the caliber and I like the look of blued rifles with wood stocks that either are or resemble the classic rifles of the 20th century. I've been looking around online and have been amazed at the variety of rifles available and in the range of cost. I do not want to go cheap and would prefer a used gun if possible. What would you recommend and what should I expect in cost? is $500, $1000, $2000 the average for a used 375? Any advice is appreciated.

I tried to purchase a new Winchester Safari Express in .375 H&H a few months ago only to be told that they were not available new this year. I tried several reputable stores too. I ended up getting a slightly used Ruger#1 Tropical in .375H&H.

Ive currently got a Safari Express and a Classic Stainless, both post CRF M-70s in .375 H&H, and I really enjoy them both.

I did change the wood out on the Safari Express for an older "Super Express" stock that is much more comfortable for me, I thought the Safari Express wood is very "clunky".

ALSO- I have had 2 post, CRF Safari Expresses that both had the extra forward barrel lug, and that lug in both cases was welded on by drunken monkeys. One was not welded on square, and the other is not centered. I needed to really releave a lot of my glass bedding job around the forward lugs to make the rifles shoot accurately.

Kimber makes a nice one by all accounts. Price should not be much of an issue if you are entertaining a safari. I think minimum fare these days is around $35k unless you have some connection in Africa.

What do you want to hunt? If you are going after plains game and not dangerous game, a 7mm Rem Mag or 30-06 will do you fine. A 6.5x284 would be outstanding as well.

I recently picked up a Belgian Browning Safari .375 on Gunbroker. I checked out quite a few options before deciding. I was not disapointed. It is a beautiful rifle and shoots like a dream. Set me back $1100.00.

I'm jonesing for the M70 Alaskan SS/Laminate.
To me it is the best combo of cost, weather proofing, not too light. If you want natural wood then one of the other choices, but I've seen these on Gunbroker from $1200-1600 (no glass).
Had no idea safaris were that much, I thought closer to $20k. Ouch. This will just have to stay a dream then...

Just this week, an older gentleman who I had been speaking with offer to let me shoot his pre-64 Win 70 in 375 H&H Magnum. It was awesome, small recoil pad but very exciting. I fired 3 rounds, felt it a bit the next day, that rifle generates 4,300+ ft-lbs of energy.

Of course I had to look it up when I got home, seems to be in the $1,500 range for a nice used one with scope. About $4-$5/rd to shoot if you don't reload. I really liked his blued/wood stock model 70, but would probably opt for a Ruger or something else with a laminate/synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel because I am more likely to take it to wet Alaska than dry Africa.

i bought six firearms from a friends son and this winchester model 70 made in 1975 in 375H&Hmag was one of them.the price was very good when averaged over the six firearms. i have not fired it yet,but it is in mint condition. in africa last may-june i used a CZ 550 in 375H&Hmag and it was more than enough rifle for the animals i was hunting. eastbank.

Love my ZKK 602 .375. A true magnum Mauser action, that .375 has a 1/2 inch of room in the magazine.

I picked up my Winchester Safari Express last year for right around $1200. Toss in another $500 for glass for a Leopold VX3 2.5-8 B&C scope and it was ready. I had to have the action bedded, Winchester seems to thunk that silly putty is acceptable bedding material, and have the crown touched up. Now she groups great and is a pleasure to shoot.

The stock is beefy, but when I shoulder the rifle it feels like it was fitted for me. It is a tank, 10lbs with glass, but then again I'd not want it much lighter. I carried it for a week last Elk season at elevations of 10,000 ft plus. If I can do it anyone can. Though I am looking at a McMillan stock to replace the wood. The McMillan will be tougher and a touch lighter.

I have the whitworth made in yugoslavia. We changed the safety to the winchester model 70 style and I carried it all over Alaska. Sadly, I never shot any animals with it.

My brother up in Alaska has two of them -and they're his usual carry in the field (he lives a full-bore subsistence life style, based in the MatSu area...). This is just a guess on my part but I think you might find a variety of used 375's up there....

Find a used Caprivi. There's a used .458 Lott model on GB with a nice Leupold scope and the .375 H&H Mag versions show up from time to time. I have a Talkeetna which is the same action but it's stainless and has a synthetic stock and is 10oz lighter than the Caprivi. It's a superb rifle and very pleasant to shoot so the heavier Caprivi should also be nice to shoot.

Huh??? You can spend over a week in Africa and take several head of plains game and not spend $10,000, including airfare.

Dangerous game is where you spend some real money. Like I said, plains game hunts are easily done for under $10,000. That said, the $17,500 10-day Cape buffalo/plains game hunt from the first link is a really nice package.

Air fare to SA is more than a decent .375 scoped properly plus you need an airline trunk for it.

we didn,t book our flight untill dec 12 for may-june 13 and the fare from sharlet nc to atlanta ga to amsterdam and on the joesberg was just under 1300 usd round trip on KLM. you can get a lower fare if you book early and shop around. we spent 30 days in south africa and botsawna and it was a wonderful trip and africa in the winter was a eye opener,.not what i expected in a good way. we were treated very well every where we went and i am going again next year. eastbank.
